2024-01-23 FAC Minutes Minutes of the Fine Arts Commission meeting held on January 23, 2024. Members present: Members absent: Kristen Adsit Tara Strickstein Victor Bruce Ian Peter Hosfeld Anne Camille Hersh Clarissa Rodriguez Michael Stock Also present: Angela Dorney, Recreation Director Leslie Rackl, Executive Assistant Mark Weiser, Music Promoter The meeting was called to order at 6:35 p.m. Correction to the minutes of the January 9, 2024 meeting. Page one, paragraph seven, line six; cha nge ‘noted’ to ‘opined’. Page one, paragraph seven, line twelve; change ‘more appropriate’ to ‘different’. Mr. Stock made a motion to approve the minutes of the January 9, 2024 meeting with corrections. Motion seconded by Ms. Rodriguez and unanimously approved. Mr. Bruce will reach out to Daniel Marosi in regards to the QR codes for the streetscape signs. Ms. Hersh noted that as a resident on the west side of Miami Shores, she is very happy and proud of the streetscape sign project. Mr. Bruce noted that former Commission member Madeline Haddocks had also requested art be placed on the west side of Miami Shores. Ms. Dorney related that Library Director Michelle Brown has inquired if the Commission will be having an art exhibit at the library; the Miami Art League has requested an exhibit in March but will give the Commission priority if one is planned. Ms. Rodriguez noted that the Commission would not be ready before March for an exhibit. Ms. Hersh said she is not a fan of the venue of Village Hall as the artist does not receive adequate art exposure. Ms. Rodriguez said that more people come to Village Hall than the 9900 building. Ms. Dorney said that currently there is limited available to utilize the 9900 building due to the set up for Council meetings. It was suggested scheduling a May date for a Library and Village Hall exhibit. Further discussion was postponed until the February meeting. Ms. Dorney related that she would like to have a food truck night in conjunctions with a Commission concert and the food trucks can be secured through the Shores Farmers Market. Ms. Hersh suggested having a girl scout cookie area at the January concert. Ms. Rodriguez will secure a second food truck for the January concert as well. Commission members reviewed the February AfroBeta concert flier. Marketing suggestions include Facebook groups, Instagram and Eventbrite. It was noted that Liset Alea will be performing the March concert; Mark Weiser will provide the sound for the group. It was related that events at the 9900 building include Chamber of Commerce events. If there was an artwork exhibit on the walls at the 9900 building, each piece could have a QR code attached containing price information. In regards to the Art In Public Places Streetscape signs on the west side of 109th Street, Commission members said if all the residents on the block objected to the signs guidelines, why didn’t they come to the last meeting. It was related that a system of procedures is needed for future Art In Public Places projects f or any future objections that may arise. Commission members expressed concern that the Village may place limits on the board in the future. Ms. Dorney suggested that the Commission think about new exhibiting locations that may not be Village owned. Ms. Adsit suggested Miami Shores Elementary’s bandshell for art exhibits. Another suggestion was a poetry night in conjunction with Flight Wine. It was noted that there is also exhibit space at Barry University. Ms. Hersh said there is a big push to do an e vent at schools; for example, Doctors Charter School. Mr. Bruce said that the fountain at Memorial Park is in need of a makeover/refurbishment. Each Commission member was asked to bring new events and new locations to the February meeting. The meeting adjourned at 7:50 p.m.
