2021-11-9 FAC Minutes Minutes of the Fine Arts Commission held on November 9, 2021. Members present: Susan Ackley Tia Bowman Victor Bruce Luis Crump Beth Dunlop Michael Stock Also present: Angela Dorney, Recreation Superintendent Leslie Rackl, Executive Assistant The meeting was called to order at 6:05 p.m. Mr. Bruce made a motion to approve the minutes of the October 12, 2021 meeting. Motion seconded by Mr. Crump and unanimously approved. Discussion turned to the NW 2nd Avenue project. It was noted that the artist selected will need to apply for a permit from the County. It was also related that there will be a site specific visit with each artist the week of December 6. Newly appointed member Beth Dunlop was introduced to the Commission. Selection of the election of Commission chair was postponed until January. Discussion turned to the back of the mural wall. The artist was asked to submit a free form drawing for the mural wall for Commission review. Discussion followed. Mr. Crump suggested using a yellow background for the wall. The Commission approved the free form design. Discussion turned to the sculpture park. It was related the artist Miguel Pryptchan has existing sculptures, but that the existing concrete bases would need to be removed. Ms. Dorney suggested having a cost estimate for installation before proceeding with any sculpture. It was noted that a call to artists for the sculpture park has not gone out. It was noted that two years is the length of time for a loaned sculpture. Discussion turned to the January Moonlight Concert. It was related that the ‘moon’ rental will not be sponsored this year due to increased costs. Marketing tools for the event are the electronic sign, social media and the Village newsletter. An 8-unit ad in the Chamber’s monthly Egret would cost $519. Mr. Stock made a motion to approve $519 for an 8-unit Egret ad for January. Motion seconded by Ms. Bowman and unanimously approved. It was noted that French Horn has agreed to perform the February Fireside Concer t on February 18 for $2000, including sound. Ms. Dunlop made a motion to approved $519 for a February Egret ad for the Fireside Concert. Motion seconded by Mr. Stock and unanimously approved. Discussion turned to the March 20 Spring Concert. Mr. Stock is open to suggestions for a band. Mr. Bruce suggested Reggae. Mr. Crump made a motion for Mr. Stock to secure a reggae band, including sound, for up to $2000. Motion seconded by Mr. Stock. Discussion turned to Black History month. It was related that the library is having a reading of The 1619 Project. The Commission suggested contributing an actor/actress to portray characters from the book for readings. Ms. Ackley has contacted Barry about their students doing this. It was noted that the Commission usually contributes a stipend of $150 per student. Ms. Dunlop said that Florida Memorial College is another option for selecting students. Ms. Bowman agreed this would be a good option. It was noted that Barry is also very diverse. Mr. Bruce suggest ed that for future events, the Commission explore all options, not only Barry. Ms. Bowman made a motion for the Commission to develop a plan with Barry to augment The 1619 Project for $150 per student, with a maximum of three students. Motion seconded by Mr. Stock and unanimously approved. Ms. Dorney related that February 12 will be the Village’s 90th Anniversary celebration. Ms. Dunlop suggested looking into having swing music at the event. Ms. Ackley suggested that the Commission have an event featuring either an opera or broadway performance. Ms. Dunlop suggested contacting the New World School of Arts. Ms. Bowman suggested a medley of styles for an event. Mr. Stock made a motion to approach New World School of Arts to create a program for an April event. Motion seconded by Ms. Bowman and unanimously approved. Ms. Dunlop offered to contact New World. It was suggested using either Miami Theater Center or Miami Shores Presbyterian’s McArthur Chapel as the venue. Discussion turned to Gallery Night. It was related that Mary Larsen has already been selected as the artist to exhibit in the lobby at Village Hall. The meeting adjourned at 7:35 p.m.
