CALL TO ORDER – 6:09PM 2. PUBLIC COMMENTS- No public comments 3. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES- There was consensus to approve the November 2021 minutes. Approved. 4. CONSIDERATIONS a. Update provided by MSES: - Daniel Diaz: Movie night was a huge success! Many more parents showed up than were expected. Tomorrow is the last day before winter recess and return to school is on January 3rd. School will be open next week for L25 (lower 25% testing scores). - Brenda Swain- holiday store was also a big success. They sold out every single day and had to go and make more purchases. - Leslie Fraser- inquired if there have been impact studies on the extra 4 days to see if it makes an impact on student performance. Ms. Swain responded that this is the first time the school has offered this. - Regarding Covid-19 Ms. Swain stated that parents have been extremely responsible about reporting. - Mr. Netto updated the Board that the PTA has started very strong. Movie night was a huge hit. Sylvie Duerkop stated the holiday shop sold over four times more than what was expected. - Mr. Netto- thank thanked Sylvie Duerkop on behalf of the Board for all her hard work with the decorations, etc. Ms. Duerkop secured a large donation from a cruise line for decorations. - Mr. Netto addressed the Cambridge program and met with Mr. Diaz recently to go over the questionnaire to make sure we were covering everything. After reviewing it and going back to the presentation, 80% of the questions were answered/presented over the presentation to Village Council. Mr. Netto suggested providing a formal answer to the Council members answering the questionnaire which they can reference if they get questions from residents. Mr. Netto stated the one point to clarify is the formalization of numbers. Because the city of Miami Shores has only sent one check for $90,000 to the school district two and a half years ago. This is all MSES has been using up to now and through June of 2022. The big question is what is next? Is there a second check somewhere? What about Fall 2022. Will a check be sent and to who? Ms. Duerkop stated as long as the city understands where the first check went to, we should not have issue for the rest. Ms. Fraser inquired whether the first check was sent with stipulations? Mr. Netto stated the biggest line item was the money for teachers (most of the money that has not been spent is that line item). - Ms. Vignale (present by phone) suggested that with Superintendent Carvalho out and a new village manager in, a meeting should be scheduled between Tabitha and new Village manager and Ms. Vignale volunteered to attend given her historical knowledge of the original agreement. - Mr. Netto wanted to check first if we have a budget for the next year in place by the Village. - Mr. Netto inquired to MSES about the teacher’s payments. Mr. Diaz explained the difference between the stipend and hourly pay. There was a discrepancy between everyone’s understanding that the teacher pay would be a stipend but contract states “hourly payment”. Mr. Diaz cannot pay teachers for extra hours until after hours. The line item should not say hourly. - Ms. Swain stated that prior to COVID-19, the goal was- intercession time (last two weeks in June). The plan was to use the Cambridge money for that training. Now that everyone is back in school, Ms. Swain sent out a survey for teachers, they voted Tuesday and we will pay them from 3:25- 5:25PM. We have thought about how to change that line item. - Mr. Netto asked if the school needs the board’s help with moving the line item? Ms. Swain did not think the Village could help but Mr. Netto has a meeting to discuss it. - Ms. Tiffany Anderson also suggested paying teachers over spring break to do a training. - Mr. Netto stated we have a clear action plan and asked Ms. Swain to let the board know if our help is needed so that we can ensure we don’t lose the next $35,000 for the next fiscal year. Mr. Netto inquired when we need to be ready for next city budget to make sure the money is properly allocated and we ask for the money needed. Holiday Breakfast - Mr. Netto inquired if we can still use the funding from the holiday breakfast grant and whether we need a formal motion to use the money? - Ms. Ysabely Rodriguez stated that we can still use the funds during the fiscal year but that we need to remember to apply for the new grant from community alliance for the following year. b. Discussion and Possible Action regarding 2022 MSES Parent survey: This discussion was tabled until the next meeting. c. School beautification: Mr. Netto inquired who cuts the grass and if we can help by speaking to the custodian. What tools/items are needed. Mr. Netto brought up the issue of much needed additional trash cans at the school. - Ms. Duerkop agreed that the school right now needs a resource for trash, help cleaning up. An extra custodian. - Mr. Netto suggested a cleaning day where the committee comes and helps. - Ms. Duerkop stated we need a monthly resource including gardening and picking up trash as well as a deep cleaning of the cafeteria once a month. - Mr. Diaz stated the cafeteria floor has been waxed twice this year already, completely emptied and waxed. 5.
