2021-05-11 FAC Minutes Minutes of the Fine Arts Commission held on May 11, 2021. Members present: Susan Ackley Beth Boone Victor Bruce Luis Crump Michael Stock Members absent: Tia Bowman Also present: Angela Dorney, Recreation Superintendent Leslie Rackl, Executive Assistant The meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. It was announced that Jewel Malone has resigned as a member of the Commission. Mr. Stock made a motion to approve the minutes of the April 13, 2021 meeting. Motion seconded by Ms. Boone and unanimously approved. It was related that the Miami Shores Chamber of Commerce has selected Angela Dorney as citizen of the year. At this time there was discussion on ways to use excess funds in the Commission annual budget. A suggestion was made to purchase stage sections. Ms. Boone also suggested spending money on art pieces. Ms. Ackley made a suggestion to utilize the money on an in - person concert in September. Ms. Dorney related that she has requested $10,000 for the Commission’s FY 2022 budget. Ms. Dorney said that the chair of the Recreation Advisory Committee has reached out since the Committee was asked for ideas relating to pride month. Ms. Dorney added that the Village Council has made a motion for ideas for pride events during the month of Jun e. The recreation department has relayed ideas to the Village Manager for events and are currently awaiting direction from the Council. Ms. Dorney asked if the Commission had any suggestions. Ms. Ackley suggested a music event next year, in partnership with the Recreation Advisory Committee. A suggestion was also made to partner with the Little Haiti Cultural Center. Discussion turned to an in-person concert behind the Field House. The Sol & Tribute Band was suggested as performers. The band would perform two 45-minute sets. Ms. Boone is familiar with this band and suggested paying them a fee of $2,000. Ms. Boone offered to donate sound equipment from Miami Light Project but the Commission would need to pay the sound technician a fee of $400. Mr. Stock made a motion to allocate $2,400 for an in- person concert on either September 17th or September 24th with Sol & Tribute Band for $2,000 and $400 for a sound technician. Motion seconded by Ms. Boone and unanimously approved. It was related that there would be no Commission meeting in July. Discussion turned to the guidelines for a call to artists. Ms. Boone noted she has not completed the guidelines yet. Ms. Boone asked if any members would l ike to help create guidelines and offered to share everything that has been created thus far. Ms. Boone also noted that criteria is still needed for the selection of artists. There will be subcommittee meeting to discuss the call to artists guidelines on May 14 th. At this time Ms. Boone left the Commission meeting. Discussion turned to the mural zoom event on May 20 th. A test zoom was scheduled for May 17th. It was noted that an installation plaque for the mural wall is needed. It was related that the Commission applied for a grant from the Miami Shores Community Alliance in the amount of $3,500 for an art in public places installation on the west side of Miami Shores. Discussion turned to the virtual Memorial Day program. It was noted that organizations in Miami Shores donate books to the library for this event. The library recommended donating the book titled ‘The Look Of The Book’. Mr. Stock made a motion for the Commission to accept the library’s recommended book ‘The Look Of The Book’ for Memorial Day for $50. Motion seconded by Mr. Bruce and unanimously approved. At this time discussion turned to new business. Ms. Ackley proposed an October artist exhibit at the library, pending the library’s approval. Ms. Dorney suggested that the Commission prepare a calendar of events for the year. Ms. Ackley volunteered to compile a calendar. The meeting adjourned at 7:00 p.m.
