Minutes of the Recreation Advisory Committee held on June 12, 2017.

The meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m.
Mr. Brady made a motion to approve the minutes of the May 1, 2017. Motion seconded
by Ms. Smith-Gulaskey and unanimously approved.
Ms. Dorney related that there were 315 kids enrolled in week 1 of Summer Camp.
Additionally, there were waiting lists for the main Summer Camp, Tween Camp, Gymnastics
Camp, Lego Camp and Piano Camp for Week 1.
It was noted that there have been no problems at the Dog Park or the Aquatic Center.
Members said that cameras are needed at the Tot Lot and the Field House. It was noted that
the police department is aware of the camera requests and they will decide the location of the
cameras.
Ms. Dorney said the recreation department applied for a grant for equipment at the Tot Lot with
the Miami Shores Community Alliance.
Ms. Dorney said the Village is asking for more revenue from recreation. The Village is looking
at a nonresident seasonal pass at the pool to create additional revenue.
Ms. Saporiti asked if the Village has reached out to the surrounding communities regarding
camps/programs offered to generate revenue. Ms. Dorney said that all sources for outreach
have been covered; including Facebook, Twitter, Village Newsletter and the 96th
Street marquee.
Discussion turned to a new recreation center. Mr. Weber asked if the Committee could
brainstorm ways to move forward with a new center. It was suggested bringing ideas to the
R.A.C. mtg., 6/12/17, pg. 2 of 2
September meeting. Mr. Hadad would like to bring in consultant Chris Zimmerman who can
give perspective on going forward with a new center. The Commission would like to provide
suggestions of architects, builders, etc., which can be presented to Council to make it easier
for them to decide whether or not to pursue a new recreation center.
Ms. Dorney related that the Village will be starting a Farmers Market at Optimist Park in
November, which will run once a week on Sunday's.
