2018-10-18 EAB MEETING MINUTESEDUCATION ADVISORY BOARD MEETING MINUTES THURSDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2018 MIAMI SHORES VILLAGE HALL CONFERENCE ROOM 6:00 PM The meeting was called to order at 6:04 pm with the following members present: Tiffany Anderson Antonio Netto Dana Vignale Patricia Walker Doug Garber Leslie Fraser Arrived later: Sylvie Duerkop Absent: Cristina Crespi Also present: Ysabely Rodriguez, Village Clerk 1. Public Comments No public comments were offered. 2. Approval of Minutes: Ms. Anderson moved that the minutes from the 9/20/18 and 10/11/18 meetings be approved, Mr. Garber seconded and the motion passed unanimously. 3. Discussion of Business: The survey was discussed in detail. It was decided that we would include an address line so later we could determine which surveys belong to Miami Shores residents. This would be especially important at Green Day. Items were changed and some wording was removed to clarify the survey. Translation of the survey was discussed, with Ms. Duerkop suggesting that it was not necessary to translate to Haitian-Creole since Miami Shores residents of Haitian descent read English and probably do not read Haitian-Creole. It was agreed we would add the option that the survey is available in that language upon request. Upon examining the details of the survey, Ms. Walker moved to delegate the board’s authority to Ms. Vignale for the expressed purpose of revising the survey as needed and create a final version based on responses from a pilot collection of surveys. Mr. Garber seconded and the motion which carried a 7-0 voice vote. Board members will collect a small amount of survey responses and Ms. Vignale will use those responses to revise, if necessary, the survey as it currently stands. She will create a final version, which Ms. Duerkop will translate into Spanish. The Board agreed to meet on November 1 instead of later in the month of November. This would allow us to look at the results of the initial survey responses and plan for Green Day and our schedule going forward as it relates to the survey. We will meet again November 28, 2018 at 6:30 PM instead of in December. The goal is to have the survey finalized and posted online, enabling the Board to include an introduction in the December newsletter and refer residents to the online survey. Ms. Vignale updated the Board on the banner issue based on her communications with the Chief of Facilities at MDCPS. He suggested we find out when the contracts expire and meet with residents, the school board, and the Education Advisory Board. Also, the Region will work with Dr. Swain and support her cooperation with the Miami Shores community. Ms. Rodriguez mentioned that the Village Manager had expressed concern that we were proceeding without the input of Dr. Swain. The Board agreed that it should ensure she is included in the survey process and all actions going forward. It was decided that those who are able would meet with Dr. Swain at MSE during the week of October 22-25, 2018, if possible, and share our actions so far regarding the survey. Ms. Swain will be invited to attend our meeting on November 1 so we can benefit from her input regarding the survey before we make it final. Ms. Vignale moved to adjourn and Ms. Fraser seconded; the motion passed unanimously and the meeting was adjourned at 7:32 pm. Next meeting: November 1, 2018, at 6:00pm. .
