Minutes of the Fine Arts Commission held on October 14, 2014.

The meeting was called to order at 6:15 p.m.
Ms. Salt made a motion to approve the minutes of the September 16, 2014,
meeting. Motion seconded by Ms. Rojas and unanimously approved.
Mr. Estep reported that the Commission has $6045 remaining in their FY 2015 budget
and the donation account has $2430.
It was noted that the PAC (Professional Advisory Committee) selected Daniel Fiorda’s
totem sculptures for the north lawn exhibit but the Village Council expressed concerns
with only looking at the sculptures in photos. Ms. Ackley and Jean Corona have
volunteered to see the sculptures in person and will report back to the Council.
It was noted that no call to artist submissions have been received. Ms. Ackley
suggested leaving Janet Mueller’s work up in the Village Hall lobby until a new artist is
selected. It was then suggested that there be an ongoing call to artists without
advertising a deadline.
Pedro Rubio was suggested as a possible artist for a January 2015 library exhibit. His
work is 2x3 and 3x5 feet long. It was noted that since his work is very detailed, it may
get lost in the Village Hall lobby. It was noted that Alissa Christine has light boxes that
may work for another exhibit. Mr. Traupman made a motion to approve Pedro Rubio
for a January library exhibit. Motion seconded by Ms. Salt and unanimously
approved.
Ms. Rojas mentioned that artist Tulia Lulu has a “Dr. Seuss” influenced book that is
bright and graphic for children and would make a great exhibit; perhaps have story time
with the author. The book is titled ‘Mr. Munchlee’s Magic Top Hat’. It was suggested
looking into an April 2015 event for this. Ms. Rojas will follow up with Tulia Lulu for an
April exhibit either April 17 or April 24. Ms. Salt made a motion to approve Tulia Lulu
for an April 17 library exhibit. Motion seconded by Mr. Stock and unanimously
approved.
It was proposed that donations be solicited for Art in Public Places and donors could
have their names put on a ‘donor wall’ at Village Hall.
It was noted that there was a good turnout for Alissa Christine’s exhibit.

It was related that the previous artist’s exhibit had left screws in the wall which impeded
the use of the hanging system for art work. It was suggested amending the library’s
procedure for exhibits for artists to use only the hanging system for their art and having a
Commission member and artist sign the agreement. It was noted that artists’ encounter
problems when hanging heavier pieces. Ms. Ackley will rewrite the library procedure
and bring it to the November meeting for review.
Discussion turned to Friday Night Live. Possible suggestions include The French Horn
($500), Grant Livingston ($300) or folk artists Debbie and Gary. Mr. Stock will check
Debbie and Gary’s availability for Feb. 20. A date for the event has not been decided
but looking at either February 20 or February 27. A suggestion was made for a second
Friday Night Live on March 13 with Zoe Lewis.
It was noted that the Commission is allocating $1000 for Unity Day and the spring
concert date will be either March 15 or March 22.
Discussion turned to the December holiday movie at O Cinema. The date of December
13 for a matinee has been confirmed with the theatre. Fridays are not available due to
scheduling conflicts. The proposed movie is Nightmare Before Christmas pending O
Cinema’s approval. The Commission will partner with the Optimist Club to collect toys for
Toys For Tots. The fee for the movie will be approximately $200-$400. The
Commission’s total budget for the movie is $600. Ms. Salt made a motion for the
Commission to approve up to $600 for a December movie matinee at O Cinema.
Motion seconded by Ms. Goodman and unanimously approved.
