2018-08-01 EAB MEETING MINUTES EDUCATION ADVISORY BOARD MEETING TUESDAY, AUGUST 1, 2018 VILLAGE HALL, COUNCIL CHAMBERS 6:00 PM A meeting of the Education Advisory Board took place on Wednesday, August 1, 2018 at the Village Hall Council Chambers. The meeting was called to order at 6:03 PM with the following members present: Present: (6) Tiffany Anderson Sylvie Duerkop Leslie Fraser (6:30 PM) Antonio Netto Dana Vignale Patricia Walker Absent: (2) Doug Garber Lilli Nguyen Also Present: Ysabely Rodriguez, Village Clerk 1. PUBLIC COMMENTS No public comments were offered. 2. BRIEF BOARDMEMBER INTRODUCTIONS 3. HOUSEKEEPING MATTERS A. Attendance Policy, Meeting Frequency, and Location The Village Clerk read the Village board attendance policy into the record and engaged the board in discussion concerning board meeting frequency and the future meeting location. By way of consensus, the board designated the Conference Room in Village Hall as the location for future board meetings and further agreed to meet on a monthly basis with the option of calling additional meetings as needed. The board deferred designating a regular meeting schedule to the next meeting. B. Recap of Sunshine Law The Village Clerk read the Sunshine Law excerpt from the Welcome Handbook into the record. C. Board Appointment of Chairperson and Secretary The Village Clerk briefly explained the specific role of the Chairperson and asked the board whether anyone was interested in serving as the Board Chairperson. Discussion ensued amongst boardmembers concerning questions posed by Mr. Netto. Ms. Anderson moved to appoint Mr. Netto as the Board Chair. The motion was seconded by Ms.Vignale, which carried a 6-0 voice vote. Miami Shores Village Responding to the Village Clerk’s inquiry, Ms. Walker volunteered to serve as the board secretary, who will be responsible for transcribing meeting minutes. By way of consensus, Ms. Walker was appointed as board secretary. D. Establish terms of office (draw straws) The Village Clerk briefly explained the methodology of drawing lots, by which terms of office will be determined for the seven boardmembers appointed by the Village Council. Individual board members drew straws to determine which three boardmembers will have a three-year term of office as opposed to the standard two- year term applicable to all other members. The results were as follows: Tiffany Anderson (2 years) Sylvie Duerkop (3 years) Doug Garber (2 Years) Leslie Fraser (2 years) Antonio Netto(2 years) Dana Vignale (3 years) Patricia Walker *(3 years) 4. DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE ACTION REGARDING NEXT STEPS The Board discussed the school rating of Miami Shores Elementary, the various areas of focus stipulated in the Education Compact in relation to student achievement, commented on data shared by Ms. Vignale, and spoke about the possibility of creating a short survey to gauge the community’s input regarding their perception of safety, facility, customer service, programs, and academics, respectively. Boardmembers agreed to prepare the following for the next meeting: - bring biography and survey questions concerning perception of safety, facility, customer service, programs, and academics - Create an introductory statement for the Education Advisory Subpage In the interim, Ms. Rodriguez will work with the Communications Manager to establish the board’s subpage and Ms. Vignale will collect data to share with the board prior to the next meeting. There being no further discussion, there was consensus regarding the next meeting’s business to: - assign the five areas of focus stipulated in the Education Compact to individual boardmembers, - discuss additional Miami-Dade County Public Schools data presented by Ms. Vignale - brainstorm the details of a citizen survey questions. The board agreed to hold their next meeting on Thursday, September 6, 2018 at 6:00 PM in the Village Hall Conference Room. 5. ADJOURN The meeting was adjourned at 7:30 PM.
