A RESOLUTION REQUESTING THE BOARD OF
REGENTS OF THE STATE UNIVERSITY SYSTEM
AND THE FLORIDA STATE LEGISLATURE TO
PROVIDE SUFFICIENT FINANCIAL RESOURCES
IN THE 1976 LEGISLATIVE SESSION TO ALLOW
FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY TO OPEN
A SECOND MAJOR CAMPUS IN THE NORTH DADE-
SOUTH BROWARD AREAS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
WHEREAS, Chapter 554 of the Florida Statutes provided for the
allocation of 400 acres for a second campus for Florida International Univer-
sity, and
WHEREAS, Florida International University now owns 106 acres
of land on the northern tip of Biscayne Bay, and
WHEREAS, Florida International University possesses the Trade
Center Building and is currently converting it to an academic facility capable
of seving at least 1600 students, and
WHEREAS, the University has developed and published an elaborate
master plan for the development of a campus to serve 15, 000 students, and
WHEREAS, the University is currently authorized to proceed with
the planning for a second building of class rooms and offices at a cost of
$8, 000, 000 and a third building, a student services center, at a cost of
$4, 000, 000, and
WHEREAS, more than 1, 000, 000 people live within reasonable
transportation time of that site but have no other convenient senior public
degree granting higher educational facilities available, and
WHEREAS, it is in the best interests of the citizens of this area
to have such a facility,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE VILLAGE
COUNCIL of Miami Shores, Florida, that the Board of Regents of the State
University System and of the Legislature of the State of Florida are requested
to take appropriate steps in the 1976 legislative session to make sufficient
financial resources available to Florida International University at the

earliest possible time to open a second major campus to serve the
North Dade-South Broward area.
