A RESOLUTION REQUESTING DADE COUNTY TO
CLEAR ITS AQUATIC PARK IN NORTH BISCAYNE
BAY OF FLOATING DEBRIS.
WHEREAS, each year when steady southeast winds prevail debris thrown
into Biscayne Bay or falling into the Bay, such as coconuts, palm fronds, grass,
various containers, in fact, anything that floats including dead animals, follows
the west shoreline of Biscayne Bay until it is trapped in North Biscayne Bay
coves; and
WHEREAS, this is definitely a health hazard as the debris and rotting
vegetation are trapped by these winds for weeks at a time causing obnoxious
odors to permeate the residences for many blocks, as well as, creating an un-
sightly condition and navigational hazzards; and
WHEREAS, it would be impractical for each municipality on Biscayne
Bay to purchase equipment for just one or two coves when it could be better done
with one piece of equipment for the whole Biscayne Bay area; and
WHEREAS, Dade County has a Pollution Control Department and a Health
Department available to work on the solution and funding; and
WHEREAS, Dade County has recently made Biscayne Bay into an aquatic
park;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY MIAMI SHORES VILLAGE:
Section 1. That Dade County be requested to take over the debris
removal from its aquatic park in Biscayne Bay in the same manner as they do
from the canals in the unincorporated areas of Dade County.
Section 2. That copies of this resolution be sent to Miami, North Miami,
North Miami Beach, and the Dade League of Cities to request that they enact a
similar resolution.
