A RESOLUTION PETITIONING THE DADE COUNTY
BOARD OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION TO CORRECT AN
ERROR IN THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE WESTERN
BOUNDARY LINE OF THE MIAMI SHORES ELEMENTARY
SCHOOL ATTENDANCE AREA.
WHEREAS, Sub-paragraph (a) of Paragraph (6) of Section 230. 23,
Florida Statutes 1951, entitled, "Powers and Duties of the County Board, " pro-
vides that the Board "approve the area from which children are to attend each
such school, such area to be known as the attendance area for that school"; and
WHEREAS, an administrative officer of the school system has
established the western boundary of the Miami Shores School attendance area
along N. W. 2nd Avenue, thereby putting that part of Miami Shores Village
lying west of N. W. 2nd Avenue in the Van E. Blanton School attendance area; and
WHEREAS, the exact half way distance between the Miami Shores
School and the Van E. Blanton School would be N. W. 3rd Avenue and which
would include all of the Miami Shores Municipal area now occupied by residents;
and
WHEREAS, Miami Shores Village maintains adequate sidewalks
for the safe passage of children from all its western areas to the Miami Shores
School which is not true between said area and the Van E. Blanton School; and
WHEREAS, Miami Shores Village maintains uniform Police patrols
along the routes taken by children to the Miami Shores School$, and
WHEREAS, Miami Shores Village permits children to ride their
bicycles on thesidewalks to and from the Miami Shores School; and
WHEREAS, Miami Shores Village has licensed a taxi company to
operate a school bus within its boundaries for the purpose of taking elementary
children to and from the Miami Shores School a service which is not provided
by the school system nor to Van E. Blanton School; and
WHEREAS, the Miami Shores Police Department has counted over
50 automobiles depositing children at the Miami Shores School with inspection

stickers on their wind shields from the City of Miami, the Village of Biscayne
Park, the Town of North Miami and the Town of Opa Locka, which indicates
that children are permitted to attend the Miami Shores .School from distances
much farther than any area within the municipal limits; and
WHEREAS, the Principal of the Miami Shores School has indicated
that some of the Village children registered on pink slips might have to be moved
and sent to Van E. Blanton School;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY MIAMI SHORES VILLAGE:
Section 1. That the Dade. County Board of Public Instruction is
hereby petitioned to correct the boundary lines of the attendance
area of the Miami Shores Elementary School to a point that
would include all of the western border of Miami Shores Village
according to the attached map.
Section 2. That this Resolution is passed after careful study
and in the best interest of the safety and welfare of the citizens
of Miami Shores Village.
Section 3. That a copy of this Resolution be presented to the
Board of Public Instruction at the earliest possible date and
favorable action be requested.
