R-266-45 RESOLUTION N0. 266 A RESOLUTION USING OPPOSITION OF THE CITY. OF MIAMI SHORES VILLAGE TO THE PLAN OF CONSOLIDATION OF DARE COUNTY, GOVERNMENTAL UNITS PROPOSED .BY MAYOR THOMSON OF THE CITY OF. MIAMI, AND REQUEST- ING SENATOR AND REPRESENTATIVES FROM DADS COUNTY TO WITHHOLD ACTION ON THAT PROPOSAL. WHMMS, there has been proposed to the senator and representatives from Dade County that' all governmental functions now existent in Dade County be abolished and re-established in a single central overall governmental unit to be known as the City and County of Miami, and. WHEREAS# it is the firm opinion of this Council that such a single government would not be to the best interests of the several widely differing areas and categories of urban and rural development in Dade County; that the proposal, if effected, would not result in appreciable economy; that serious harm would be done to the smaller cities and communities through a loss of control of zoning, regulation of liquor establishments, gambling, and other special controls and safeguards now enjoyed by them; and would deprive them of the privilege of determining and maintaining the standard and level of municipal services they do or may in the future desire; and WHEREAS, it is the positive knowledge of the Council that its people do not desire to be submerged in such a centralized, remote control "city-county" government, and that they strongly wis# to continue with the control and operation of the affairs of their own community, and SEAS, the present proposal is obviously un-American, unfair, and confiscatory, insofar as the people of Miami Shores Village are concerned, as it gives them no opportunity to express themselves by balloting as a community upon the proposal, NOSE, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MIAMI SHORES VILLAGE, FLORIDA _ That this Council, on behalf of the people of the City of Miami Shores Village, Florida, does hereby express its deter- mined opposition to the plan of centralized "city-county" govern• ment for Dade County proposed by Mayor Thomson of the City of Miami, and does hereby request Senator D. C. Coleman and Repre- sentatives Charles 0elkers, George Okell and G. W* Peters not to introduce said measure in the Senate or House of Representatives of the legislature of Florida, and to oppose any measure intro- duoed therein similarly affecting the City of Miami Shores Village+ UNANIMOUSLY PASSED AND ADOPTED this day of •h, A.D., 1946. . mayor ATTEST g c 1 ag ManageVerand -0 er
