August 21, 1989
A regular meeting of Miami Shores Village Historic Preservation Board
was held at Miami Shores Village Hall on Monday, August 21, 1989, The meeting
was called to order at 7:30 P,M, by Vivian Rodriguez, Chairman, with the
following members present;

2, MINUTES — MAY 15, 1989
Ms, Newton called for a change of wording, pg 2, #5, 1st paragraph,
change Village to Shores, and paragraph 3, add word Theater,
The minutes of the meeting of May 15, 1984 were approved, after change,
by a motion by Mr. Gaggstatter, seconded by Ms. Newton, and passed by
unanimousTvote,
3, WELCOME -OF NEW MEMBER, MARGARITA COUNTNEY
Mrs, Margarita Courtney was welcomed as the new Member of -the Board,
The secretary prepared a packet of the forms most used by the Board for
her perusal, Mrs. Rodriguez suggested she study the Ordinance and the
other forms so as to acquaint herself with the workings of the Board,
she will discuss with her•later any questions Mrs. Courtney might have,
4, CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATES
HEGEDUS RESIDENCE,.940 NE 95 ST,
Mrs, Rodriguez noted that she signed and approved a Certificate of
Appropriatness for Mr. Hegedus, 940 NE 95 St, for a screen porch addition
on the rear of his house,
The Ordinance states that a request for Certificate of Appropriateness
must be responded to within ten days. She was unable to reach any Member,
She discussed the addition with Mr; Hegedus. the porch is on the rear of
the house and not visible from the front at all, Mrs, Rodriguez made the
announcement, to make Members aware of the addition,
5. HISTORIC PRESERVATION BOARD SERIES IN VILLAGEH'NEWS
Mrs, Rodriguez advised Members that she had excellent response, both by
phone and letter to the picture and article in the Village News, which did
not cost the Historic Preservation Board anything. She received a letter
and a call from Jesus Mendez, Social Science Professor at Barry University,
Mr, Mendez saw the article, and•is•very interested in a project for his
students to become active in, He wants to work with the Board on this,
Mrs. Rodriguez further stated she would like to continue to include'the
articles in the Village News, considering the good response, She could use
some help in writing the articles. Sandy will be. glad t.p include them.
Discussion ensued, concerning a contest identifying old houses in Miami

Shores. Nothing concrete concerning this contest was decided upon.
There was also discussion, regarding the find of a horse head under the
sidewalk on 101 Street, this was reported by Mr. Philpot. It was specu.
lated, that this might be the result of landfill in the area. •
Mrs. Rodriguez will contact Bob Carr concerning the matter.
6. ,PROPOSAL 10 RENAME• 96TH STREET SHORELANDBLVD.
Mrs. Rodriguez noted, she had discussed this with Barbara Witte, who
thought it a good idea, she mentioned some original photographs which
showed signs indicating 96th Street as Shoreland Blvd. Sandy also thought
the idea a good one. The Board needs to enter a.formal proposal to Council.
procedure for renaming was discussed. It was felt this would give the
Village a positive -image, and highlight history,
Ms. Newton moved to propose to Council that 96th Street be renamed Shoreland
Blvd, the motion was seconded by Mr. Gaggstatter, and -passed unanimously,
.7: \ANTS , REPORTS, ANNOUNCEMENTS
In the follow up on her announcement at the May meeting, regarding the
possibility of placing an ad in the Village News and splitting the cost
with the Theatre, Mrs. Rodriguez announced, she had talked with Barbara
Witte concerning the matter, She was advised the cost rather than $75.00
for a full page ad is more like $250.00. The cost was considered exorbitant,
and the idea dropped since the picture and article served the sane purpose'
and is free of charge.
There was discussion concerning the budget for the coming year, which
Mrs. Rodriguez.di.d not•have time to prepare. Mr. LuBien advised her that
there will be no problem with a budget of $1,000.00 or less.
She will continue to look into the prospect of used -cabinets in which to
store sets of prints, Mr. Gaggstatter suggested, he will look into the
possibility of pas tic tubes. At least this will get•the prints unfolded,
Mrs. Rodriguez announced the Florida Trust Historic Preservation Annual
Conference will be held in Lakeland, September 28-30.
The Historic Preservation Trust National Conference is scheduled for
October 9.44 in Philadelphia.
Discussion too01ace, concerning the Covenant., Members should lobby the
Council Members for a change. There is a goal to get local designation
for homes on the National -Register. Ms. Newton suggested homeowners be
invited. to Historic Preservation Board. meeting at which time their home
will be recommended.to Council as_Historic Landmark locally. It is hoped
'thismethod.will get people,to sign the Covenant.for local designation.
Ms. Newton also suggested:recognition for.the owner of 363 NE 98 Street,
for the fine job done on restoring the front of their house. The house
is not a designated landmark in Miami Shores.

The history of 1051 NE 92 Street and 1210 NE 100 Street was discussed.
There:"being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting adjourned
