January 16, 1989
A.regitlar meeting of the Miami Shores Village Historic Preservation Board
was held at the. Miami Shores Village, Hall, on Monday, January 16, 1989. The
meeting was called.to order at 7:35 P.1. by ,Vivian Rodriguez., Chairman, with
thefollowing. members present:

2. MINUTES - NOVEMBER 21, 1988
There was a correction to the minutes-. in #4, paragraph 3,: National Resource
Foundation,. corrected to read Foundation. The minutes
were approved, as corrected, by a motion made by Mr. Gaggstatter, seconded
by Mrs. .Kern, and passed -by unanimous vote.
3. REPORT..ON PRESENTATION &.;INSTALLATION OF°_PLAQUES...:AND-_CERTIFICATES
Mrs.. Rodriguez reported on the Council_ meeting of December 6, 1988.
Certificates and plaqueswere presented to the property owners ofthe last
six properties designated. She has had conversation with John M. Moore,
Street Supervisor for Public. Works Department, and he will be responsible
for, attaching the plaqueto the designated house.
4. ASSIGNMENTS FOR. NEW.: DESIGNATIONS
Each Member received a copy of the Miami. Shares National Resgister Property/
Thematic Resource Nomination, 1988.
Ms,. Newton noted. she had .received a.letter indicating approval of the list
as submitted., she will make a copy of this letter and get it to Chairman
Rodriguez.
Mrs. Rodriguez requested that each Member take at least one of the properties
which has not been designated locally, and attempt to obtain. designation, and
Covenant signed by the..owner.. Mrs. Rodriguez will.also get' to each Member,
as soon as possible,a list of funds available, concerning grants.... It is
hoped. this information will.aid`Members in convincing ownersto havetheir
property locally designated. The assigned list is as follows:
Margo Newton- 262 N, E. 96th St and 284 N. E. 96th St.
Hank Gaggstatter - 561.N. E, 101st St. and 1291 N, E. 102nd St.
Henry Courtney - 353 N. E., 91st St. and 145.N. E. 95th St.
Marty -Kern -- 107 N. E. -96th St..,and.553 N. E. IOlst St.
Vivian Rodriguez - 477 1(. E. 92nd St. and 253 N. E. 99th St.

5. 341 N. E. 92nd St. - PROPOSED FOR DESIGNATION
Mrs. Rodriguez announced., this is the home of Jerry.& Marty Stofik.
It had not been considered before because so..much of the Mediterranean
Revival influence of the home.had been removed byprevious owner.
Mrs. Stofik has restored.the home to the original. influence, as designed
by architect, Robert Law Weed. Mrs. Stofik has indicated that she is
willing to sign the covenant.
Mr. Courtney movedto recommend for Council consideration as Historic
Landmark, this home. at 341 N. E. 92nd St. Mr. Gaggstatter seconded the
motion which passed unanimously.
At this point, Margo Newton•requested a.ehange in the minutes of November
21, 1988, #5 - to reflect that the meeting with Mr.. Konover did take • place.
6. COMMEMTS, REPORTS, ANNOUNCEMENTS
Ann Guthrie, Project Manager far the Downtown:Revitalization.Board was
introduced. She gave an overview of'her previous experience:.working with
schools, parks, and department of tourism. Also she gave her background
experience in working on Trusts and -Grants. All this experience is an
excellent background for her work as Project Manager, with put Downtown
Revitalization Board. In her three weeks on the-job,:she.hassadly seen
the closing of the Miami Shores Bakery, and the children' s:c1otl t.ng store,
and the opening of a Flower Shop. on N. E. 2nd; Ave.. Mrs. "Guthrie further
informed Members, her husband, Michael is the Chief Curator. of: rt at the
Bass Museum on Miami Beach.
In reply to query, Mr. Courtney stated thereare no plans for removal of
brick from the facade of the Miami Shores Theatre. He did report that a
Manager has been engagedand everything is running along very smoothly.
Mr. Courtney was excused at this time.
SEE AMENDED Ms:...Newton commented. on her recent experience:in.Winter Park, their lack
MINUTES 2/22/ of a Historic Preservation,. Ordinance. Shedlentioned the dela litidn.. of
89 an old school and proposed:demolitinn by Rollins College of a house which
is 100 years old, this to -make room for additional.parking,for students.
She further noted that she had appeared before the Commission regarding
the matter. As a result a.temporary hold has been placed on the demolition
of the house, and a Historic Preservation Ordinance is in the process of
being written.
Announcement was made concerning the Freedom Tower:,.in downtown Miami, in
December.
Also Art Deco Weekend on Miami Beachwas termed a hugh success.
There being
no further business, the meeting adjourned at 8:30 P.M.
