HISTORIC PRESERVATION BOARD
December 15, 1986
A regular meetingof the Miami Shores. Historic Preservation Board
was held on Monday, December 15., 1986 at 7:00 P.M.. The meeting was called
to order by Chairman, Margo Newton, with the following Members present:

Absent: Addea Colangelo
2. MINUTES - August 18, 1986 & November 17, 1986
The minutes of the meeting of August 18, 1986 were approvedpby a motion
made by Mr. Courtney, seconded by Mr.. Gaggstatter, and passed unanimously.
The minutes of the meeting of November_17y. 1986 were approved, as written,
by a motion made by Mr. Gaggstatter, seconded by Vivian Rodriguez, and
passed unanimously.
3. GRANT
Ms. Newton read in part from a letter she received from Division of
Historic Resources, Bureau of Historic Preservation. .Of the thirty five
grant applications considered, the Advisory Council recommended funding
for twenty three, of which Miami Shores ranked. No. 12. of the top ranked
projects awarded. A.formal grant award agreementwill be forthcoming.
In response to Mr. Courtney's query, Mrs.. Rodriguez explained the grant
money is to be used to hireaa prefessional consultant to aid_Members in
preparing the Thematic Group Nomination to the National Register. This
is a matching grant-in-aid assistance program where. Members contribute in
kind services. Ms.. Newton was not sure of the completion date, but
indicated she will research this.
4. COVENANT - DISCUSSION
Mr Courtney noted that he had not had the time to review the Covenant,
but will do so. It was suggested that he look atit in termsof the
Historic Preservation Board Ordinance, and hopefully make it more accept-
able to owners of potential Historic Landmark homes.
Mr. Gaggstatter moved to table this item to the next meeting, seconded by
Vivian Rodriguez, and carried unanimously.

5. APPLICATION FOR CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATNESS

940 N, E. 95th St.
The .application is a request to reroof an:accessory building (garage only)
at this residence. Generally. the Planning & Zoning Board requires a letter
from Structural Engineer or Architect stating that the roof will not
support tiles. The Secretary reported that this was discussed at the last
Planning & Zoning Board Meeting, and because of the urgency, and the house
being a Historic Landmark, it was determined approval be granted to reapply
a similar shingle roof, if the:.Historic Preservation Board grants approval.
Mr. Courtney moved to approve the request, seconded by Vivian Rodriguez,
and carried unanimously.
6. ELECTION OF CHAIRMAN
Ms. Newton advised Membersthat she was elected tofill the term of Marty
Stofik, it is therefore time to elect a new Chairman.
Mrs. Rodriguez.moved to elect Margo.Newton as. Chairman., seconded by
Mr. Courtney, and carried unanimously.
7. COMMENTS, REPORTS, ANNOUNCEMENTS
Mr. Courtney reportedthat he had conversation with Della Zaher, Principal
at Miami Shores Elementary School., concerning the condition of windows.
Ms., Zaher stated, she also has been concerned about the windows, she has
planned to make application to the School. Board to have the windows re- +�
placed. The windows are old and have never been replaced, and she is
confident that this -can beaccomplished with:no,further action on the H
Board's part. She did express pleasure that.the Board Members are interested.
She. indicated this will add credence to her request to reglaze the panes. 0
Vivian Rodriguez reported, there is much planned for the month of January. ani
The Art Deco Weekend, the Developers MiamiBeachConference,'the Biltmore
Preservation Ball. Most of these activities within the week, Jan 15 -17th.
The opening of the Biltmore will benefit the 'National Trus Viand the Florida �a
Trust. The Biltmore Ball will be an outstanding event, and the Biltmore
itself is certainly worth a visit. It is most spectacular, reported
Margo Newton.
Mr. Courtney noted , he is interested in the Art Deco Ball, and
Mrs. Rodriguez stated she will see that he receives an invitation.
Mr..Gaggstatter inquired as to when the next workshop would be, to work on
the.:. Archiver: files. Mk. Courtney suggested Saturday, January 31, 1986,
10:00 A.M., and this was aggreable to all.

Discussion followed, concerning articles for the newsletter, featuring
Historic Landmark Homes in Miami Shores. Maria Hoey was suggested as
the person to do the writing, and homes to be featured will be suggested
at the Workshop meeting.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting adjourned
at 7:45 P.M.
