5. ROBERT LAW WEED ARCHITECTURAL DRAWINGS...Vivian D. Rodriguez
Mrs. Rodriguez recapped discussion of past meetings, concerning the
collection of architectural drawings of Robert Law Weed, owned by Dick
Johnson, a Miami Shores resident. Mr. Johnson obtained the drawings
when he purchased the former offices of Robert Law Weed.
The collection was reviewed by Mrs. Rodriguez and Emily P. Dieterich,
Metro Dade .Historic Preservation Division. Mrs. Rodriguez further re-
ported, the bulk of the properties are in Miami Beach and Miami Shores,
and most of the drawings are of 1930, though there are some as early as
1924. This is the period most noted for its' Mediterranean Revival
style of architecture. The year 1940 was determined as the cut off point,
for the purpose of looking at drawings for consideration. Addresses are not
generally listed, but legal description is, and hopefully the drawings
can be matched to the properties, once the lists are typed.
There are a significant number of commercial and public properties, which
are of interest, not only to Miami Shores, but Countywide. Some of those
mentioned by Mrs. Rodriguez are: Miami Shores Elementary School, a full
set of drawings; the American Bakeries Building,at 5th Ave and 32nd St, is
Art Deco style; the Boulevard Shops on Biscayne Blvd; Mayfair Theater;
Miami Shores Golf and Country Club; two theatres in Coral Gables; Miami
Memorial Park Mausoleum.

HISTORIC PRESERVATION BOARD -2- 3/17/86
Among the numerous plans for Miami Shores residences, again not identified
by address are: the home on Biscayne Blvd & 100th St., 96th St. & Biscayne
Blvd., Addea. Colangelo, lives in a house designed by Robert Law Weed;
there are also plans for the new Miami Shores Corp, which will be of
interest, and useful in the research for The Thematic Group Nomination
Project. These are drawings of 1929, and possibly built in 1930 - 1931;
and will require matching the drawings to the house.
There are a number of beautiful color renderings, especially in the Art
Deco buildings.
Mr. Ivan Rodriguez will be working closely with Mr. Dick Johnson, and the
donation he wi11 make to the Woodrow Wilson Archives.
Discussion continued, concerning Mr. Weed's style of architecture. He did
not seem to have a particular style, moving with the times. He went from
Mediterranean Revival in the twenties and early 1930s , to a more conser-
vative style, and then in the late 1930s he picked up on the Art Deco
influence. He even built interior cabintry and furniture for some homes.
6. REVIEW OF VILLAGE SLIDES...Hank Gaggstatter
This review was postponed to the next meeting for the benefit of the
absent members.
7. COMMENTS, REPORTS, ANNOUNCEMENTS
Mrs. Rodriguez reported on the Florida Trust meeting held in Boca Raton,
and the video tape put together by Marty Stofik. Some Miami Shores sites
were used and this should be exciting to see.
Mr. Edgar Bundy, 269 N. E. 100th St., was present at the meeting. He gave
some background on his family, his home in Wheaton, 111, and his home here
in Miami Shores. He stated he is in posession of the original title,
transferring the land from Spain to Florida.. The house was built in 1925.
In reply to query, Mr. Bundy stated that, Yes, he would like to have his
home designated, but wants to know more of what it all entails. Qualifica-
tions were briefly explained.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 P.M.
