HISTORIC PRESERVATION BOARD
October 21, 1985
A regular meeting of the Miami Shores Historic Preservation
Board was held on Monday, October 21, 1985. The meeting was called
to order by Margo Newton at 7:45 p.m., at the Miami Shores Village
Hall. The following members were present:

Addea Colangelo
H. D. Gaggstatter, Jr.
Vivian D. Rodriguez
The meeting was delayed due to a useless effort to get the
tape recorder operative. There will be notape of this meeting.
2. MINUTES
Corrections to the minutes:Pg.2, #6• offered to the Woodrow
W. Wilkins Archives of Architectural Records. Pg 2, #7,
paragraph 3: _ a Thematic Resource Historic District for The
National Register. Pg 3, /11• The Florida Trust, the
National Trust for Historic Preservation.
M. Gaggstatter moved to approve the minutes of the meeting of
September 16, 1985 as amended, seconded by Vivian Rodriguez,
and carried unanimously.
3. SPEAR- HARRIS HOUSE
287 N. E. 96th ST.
A letter was sent to Jay Young and Laura Koch, informing them
that Council has approved the Board's recommendation to designate
this house as a Historic Landmark. A copy of the covenant was
also sent.
4. WOODROW W. WILKINS ARCHIVES OF ARCHITECTURAL RECORDS
Margo Newton announced that she attended Woodrow W. Wilkins Archives
of Architectural Records Advisory Board meeting and reported that
our Members will assist in cataloging the works of Robert Law Weed.
Becky Smith requested help in identifying Walter DeGarmo buildings
in Miami Shores, and Margo volunteered Members assistance.
5. CHRISTMAS, CANDLELIGHT OPEN HOUSE TOUR - DECEMBER 11, 1985
Plans are well underway with the Shores Heritage Council for the
Christmas Open House Tour, to be held on December 11, 1985,
7 - 9 p.m.. There will be no bus this year. The $10;00 cost
for tickets will include the tour, entrance to Boutique and re-
freshments. Addea Colangelo announced the Christmas Boutique

will be stationed in her front yard, and refreshments served
about 8:00 p.m. in the rear yard. Vivian Rodriguez will
organize refreshments. The hone of Marty Stofik will be one
of the houses decorated for the tour, others will be announced
later.
6. COMMENTS, REPORTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
Ms. Newton reported the First Evening of History will be held
at her home on Saturday, October 26, 1985.
She also reported on the National Trust 39th National Preservation
Conference, which she attended Ott 9 - 13th in Seattle,Wash. She
purchased several books and publications which she will make
available to anyone who wishes to borrow them.
The Heritage Run generally held during Dade Heritage Days, will
be called Mayor's Heritage Run, and co-sponsored with the Mayor's
Task Force.
In her conversation with Mr. Tann, Village Attorney, regarding the
Covenant verbage, Ms. Newton reported, it is his opinion that the
covenant is necessary to make it legally binding and fair for all
concerned. It protects both the home owner and the Village.
Another effort will be made to obtain Covenant signature for those
who have not signed. The nine properties designated were divided
among Members to contact.
The Oscar Dooly House - now the Keller residence, 1291 N. E. 96th St.,
will be placed on the agenda of the next meeting for discussion.
Friday, November 15, 1985, Mr. Zimny will be here from Tallahassee,
to help decide which houses to include in the Archivoc. Thematic Group
nomination to The National Register of Historic Places.
A letter has been sent to Mr. Franklin Grau, Chairman of the
Downtown Revitalization Board, informing him the Board will help,
however possible, in the Main Street Program, and any Downtown Revitali-
zation Projects and Plans,
Dade Council of Preservation Board meeting, October 28, 1985, 12:15,
at the Miami Womens Club.
Ms. Newton reported, she sent a donation to the Red Cross for the
Mexican Relief Fund in memory of Greg Anderson. She has had a reply
from Kathy, his wife, which members read.
The meeting adjourned at 8:55 p.m.
