03-19-1984 Regular Meeting21iami Aores`fllage F L OR ID A HISTORIC PRESERVATION BOARD MARCH 19, 1984 A regular meeting of the Historic Preservation Board of Miami Shores Village was held on Monday, March 19, 1984, The meeting' was called to order at 7:30 p.m. at the Miami Shores Village Hall, The following members were present: Marty Stofik, Chairman James A. Dixon, Jr. Henry D. Gaggstatter Victor D. Griffith Absent; Ralph Renick Mr, Renick advised Mrs. Stofik that he would be unable to attend. 2. 'MINUTES: Correction to the minutes of February 27, 1984 was called for by Mr! Gaggstatter. Page 2, Item (d) gavel passed to Mr. Griffith. Nr, Dixon moved to approve the minutes as corrected, seconded by Mr, Griffith and carried unanimously, 3, \CONSIDERATION OF NOMINATED PROPERTIES (b) 1291 N. H,.96 Street, owner - Henry Keller, Jr, Members reviewed photographs and fact sheet of this house. Mr, Keller was not present, however, Mrs. Stofik stated that In telephone conversation with Mr. Keller he indicated no objection to the house being designated. He further stated, he is in the midst of some remodeling which is certainly compatible to the existing structure. He is definitely in- terested in maintaining the house in its present configuration. Mrs, Stofik noted that this property qualifies under a number of categories, namely, the work of a master, its association with a person of prominence in local history, and its location. Following discussion, and noting that the house is very worthy of designation, Mr. Dixon moved for recommendation as a Histor- ical Landmark, seconded by Mr. Gaggstatter, and carried unanimously, • • (IO iarni Jhorenillage FLORIDA 72°7. March 19; 1984 310 N, E, 99 Street, owner - Richard Carl Members reviewed the fact sheet and photographs. Mrs, Stofik noted this house is significant for its size and use of detail. Mr. Richard Carl stated the house plans are dated 1922 and it is -his. understanding the house was built some- time there about, It was the Etheridge home from whom he purchased it in 1963. He further stated that there had been no changes until the time he modernized the kitchen and installed a pool. Mr. Carl stated that he has no objection to designation. Following discussion Mr. Gaggstatter moved to recommend for Landmark Designation, seconded by Mr, Griffith, and carried unanimously, Mrs, Stofik advised Mr, Carl, this may come before Council • at the April 10 meeting, and he will be notified. • (c) -257 N. E; 91 Street, owner-- Mrs. 0. Be -Simmons, Jr. Mrs, Simmons attended the meeting with. her daughter, lia,Jane Fisher, who stated what fun it was growing up in such. -a colorful home, Mrs, Simmons told the story of Ralloweenjpraniksters setting fire to the front screen door, making it necessary to change to the wrought iron door which is there now, Discussion followed, ,.'Mrs, Simmons stated, she does not object to designation, Mr, Dixon•moved for recommendation for Landmark Designation, seconded by W. Griffith, and carried unanimously, 4, CONSIDERATION OF TABLED ITEMS Mr, Gaggstatter moved to remove these items from the table, seconded by Mr. Dixon and carried unanimously. (a) 284 N. E. 96 Street, owner - Dennis Fisher Mrs. Stofik noted that the main reason for considering the Fisher residence is its relationship to the Harris, -Spear, and Alexander houses as a district. Following discussion, Mr. Griffith moved to recommend the house for designation. The motion died for lack of a second. • Miami cJhores 9 illage F L OR ID A 73 arch 191 1984 bra I?xon llimred to table recommendation, seconded by 7q, Paggskatter and p;ssse4 unanimously, C'I an L 1 Q5 Street, planer Dudley Ca.*rthsn * , Dixon stated this house is one of the very few:wood frae structures in Miami Shores, It is not represen- tatiwe of Nkamii Shores or South Florida, though it is elegant, it has no particular historical significance, Mr, Aixon moved to drop this item from the list for consideration) seconded by—Mr, Griffith, with the statement that, to drop it, means only that it Is not worthy of designation, at this tune, the motion carried unanimously, Mrs. Stofik stated for the record, that someone at some- time must take action to preserve at least one home built from the lumber from the Royal Palm Hotel, • (c) 501 N, E, 94 Street, owner Robert Roppen Mrs, Stofik read a letter from Mr. Roppen indicating that he does not wish his home to be designated. Mrs. Stofik further stated that the house can be recommended for Land- mark Designation and not be sent to Council. Following discussion Mr. Griffith moved for recommendation, seconded by Mr, Gaggstatter, and passed 3-0 with Mr, Dixon abstaining. Mr, Dixon stated he did not wish to cast a vote where the owner is obviously, definitely opposed, (d) 369 N. E, 97 Street, owner M3ehae1 Pk Couikaly Following review of the fact sheet and photographs of this property, members agreed there is nothing remarkably historic about the house.
