A regular meeting of the Historic Preservation Board was held on Monday, December 20, 1982, at 7:30 P.M. at the Village Hall, with the following members present: Marty Stofik, Chairman C. Lawton McCall Ralph Renick . Victor D. Griffith Absent: James A. Dixon, Jr, 2. MINUTES.: Minutes of the meeting of November 22, 1982 were approved as written by motion made by Ralph Renick, seconded by Mr. McCall, and carried unanimously. 3. CERTIFICATES OF DESIGNATION AND PLA'UES: Mrs. Stofik advised she contacted the Metro Board -requesting a copy' of their Certificate of Designation. • .Mr. Thomas Beck, 357 N.E. 92nd Street, an artist, volunteered to contribute to the artwork on our certificates and Mrs. Joyce Held, 52 N.E. 98th Street, master calligrapher, agreed to assist with the lettering on the seal. Following discussion of the proposed design, probable Cost of.both the certificates and plaques, it was agreed that input would be requested by the Board members as follows: Mr. Ralph Renick will contact the Fine Art Department of Barry University with copy of our rough sketch from the Shoreland logo advertise- ment for the plaques. He also offered to speak to Nr. Bill Wood of Savannah, who designated homes in the past. Mr. Victor D. Griffith will speak with Bill Bynum, 1084 N.E. 97th Street (Miami Tile) relative to the plaques. Mr. McCall will contact his sister, an artist, for information and copies of Charleston's certificates and designation plaques. • December 20, 1982 Mrs. Stofik will contact the National Register, the National Trust for Historic Preservation and Dade Historic Preservation Division. 4. HONORARY 'DESIGNATION FOR OLDEST BUILDINGS: 'Mr. McCall looked at every house in Miami Shores Village: He examined records at the Village Hall; sought out old tax records at the Courthouse and examined old insurance files with Mr. Tom Baden. Mr. McCall will continue his research until we obtain definitive in- formation: Mrs. Stofik.advised she will assist Mr. McCall research • old tax records. Mr. McCall noted that per advice of Thelma Peters, precise in- formation on the oldest house in the Village may be obtained from filmed tax records (prior to 1925) housed at the downtown library, Mr. McCall will request assistance from a retired school teacher, now a resident of the Village. Mrs, Stofik will also research this. 5: NOMINATIONS FOR'PROPERTIES TO BE CONSIDERED FOR LANDMARK DESIGNATION: Following discussion of the many properties considered for probable landmark designation, it was decided that a Landmark Site. Fact Sheet would be prepared and distributed to•the Board. The Fact Sheet reports will be ready for our January meeting, prepared by the Board members on the six (6) properties listed below: Mr. Dixon - Miami Shores Community Chapel 9823 N.E,'4th Avenue Mr. Renick - Miami Shores Elementary School 10351 N.E. 5th Avenue Mrs. Stofik - Grand Concourse Apartments 421-427 Grand Concourse Nell Alexander residence (Roy Wright) 262 N.E. 96th Street Mr. - Pratt Spears (Harris house) 287 N.E. 96th Street Mr.Griffith - Hansford D. Tyler 431 N.E.. 94th Street Mrs. Stofik will take photographs to accompany the Landmark Site Fact Sheets. flecember 20, 1982 6. COMMENTS, REPORTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS: The Board selected the morning of January 15th for a group observation tour of the Village. A vehicle, preferably a station wagon, is required. Mrs. Stofik advised that the Ordinance revision for National approval has passed Council. The Chairman attended the reception in honor of the publication of "From Wilderness to Metropolis: The History and Architecture of Dade County, Florida 1825-1940='; researched and written by the Metro -Dade Historic Pre- servation Division. The Chairman requests approval of the Village Manager for purchase of this publication, at a member discount price, for use by the Board and publie•at Miami Shores Village. The Board received an invitation to attend the Florida Statewide Conference for Historic Preservation Boards and Commissions at The James L. Knight Convention Center, Brickel]. Avenue, on Saturday, January 22, 1983, 8:30 to 5:00 p.m. The Chairman will attend and requests permission from the Village Manager that the Secretary to the Historic Preservation Board attend this learning experience. A report of this meeting will be made at our January meeting. Mr. Renick suggested featured articles be placed in Neighbors, Chamber of Commerce publicationsand the Village Newsletter informing the public of the significance of the Historic Preservation Board.
