HISTORIC PRESERVATION BOARD
NOVEMBER 22, 1982
A regular meeting of the Historic Preservation Board was held
on Monday, November,22, 1982, 7:30 P.M. at the Miami Shores Community
Center, with the following members present:

Page 2, paragraph 2, Mr, McCall called for correction of spelling
of surnames. Frank 0. Pruitt (363 N.E. 98 St.), Barnott Homestead and
Paul Prigg Home. Motion was made for approval of the minutes. of October 4th,
as corrected, seconded by Mr. Griffith and carried unanimously.
3) CERTIFICATES OF DESIGNATION
& DESIGNATION PLAQUES
Mrs. Stofik, Chairman, submitted a plaque design per the logo of
the Shoreland Company for consideration and suggested that the least
expensive method would be to have decal printed in color and affixed
to a ceramic plaque.
Following discussion by the Board, Mrs. Joy Held, 52 N.E. 98th Street,
a master calligrapher, offered her assistance.in preparing a design for
designation plaques. Her offer was graciously -accepted by the Board.
The members were in agreement that the approved decal preferably be fired
on tile. This will be discussed further at a later date.
The Chairman proposed to obtain a copy of the County's Certificate
of Designation as a. model for our certificates. Copy will be available
at our next meeting.
4, HONORARY DESIGNATION FOR OLDEST BUILDINGS:
Mr. McCall is investigating to determine the. oldest residence in
Miami Shores. He advised the Board that further research has to be under-
taken to document the oldest house which he thinks would have been con-
structed in 1920.

Mr. Griffith commented it was customary to mark the year of
construction on plumbing fixtures in the early 1920's.
With reference to granting honorary historic status to the
oldest private, public and commercial buildings in the Village,
it was agreed that the oldest commercial:building may be the
Dean Witter building (1925) on the N.W. corner of N.E, 2nd Avenue
and 96th Street; the oldest public building (1925) may be the Miami
Shores Community Church, 9823 N.E. 4th Avenue, the site of the first
pump house..
5. NOMINATIONS FOR PROPERTIES TO BE
.CONSIDERED FOR HISTORIC LANDMARK DESIGNATION
Inquiries were received from residents. expressing interest in
historic landmark -designation for their homes. The following residents
attended the meeting and each gave a short description of their property
and reasons why they considered their home of historical interest:

Ms. Nancy Galvian,.280 N.E. 91 Street also expressed interest
in historic landmark designation, however, she did not attend the meeting.
The Board will.commence nominating historic landmark sites'in
January. Council approval is required on all'Historic Preservation
Board nominations for historic designation.
The Chairman advised the Board we have in our records the County
historic site survey on many homes in the Village and at a later date
all parties interested in historic landmark designation will complete
a form, -now being drafted, to be utilized by us for background research.
The designees will be invited to a future meeting at which the Board
will go into depth and explain to designees what we are doing, what
nomination for'historic landmark designation will entail and clarify
any points outlined in our Ordinance.
6. ESTABLISH RECORD KEEPING PROCEDURE:
A Historic Landmark Site Factsheet will be prepared for the next
meeting so members of the Board can set down information as to which
houses are possible candidates for his nomination, what action was taken,,
Council's action, etc., in order to acquire a continual updatefor our
records.
Mr. Dixon requested that we continue the agenda to adjournment
and item 7. the slide presentation, be shown at the end of the meeting.
All on the Board concurred.
8. COMMENTS, REPORTS, ANNOUNCEMENTS:
The City of Miami Historic Preservation Division is preparing an
application to the National Endowment.t� Arts for a grant to sponsor
the preparation of design guidelines of historic South Florida building
types, As a potential user of.such information, they request a letter
from our Board supporting the grant application, The proposed design
g uideline project will encompass Mediterranean revival, Bahamian Conch,
bungalow and art deco buildings, outlining information on the characteristics,
appropriate restoration and remodelling techniques, as well. as technical
Information: This will be available to the Board whenever required.
Mr. Dixon moved that the Chairman of the Historic Preservation Board
prepare a letter to the County supporting their application for Federal
grant, seconded by Mr. Griffith and carried unanimously.
Mrs. Stofik noted that Council made some changes in our Ordinance
that should satisfy the National organization and obtain approval in order
for our Historic Preservation Board to qualify as proper and legal under
County Ordinance

Discussion was held.With reference to Board members getting
together on a weekend and touring the Village in a van, This group
observation of sites. in the Village will'he taken up at our January
meeting.
7. SLIDE PRESENTATION - Mr. McCALL;
Mr. McCall presented slides encompassing time frames from
the Shoreland Company, the development firm that built the Shores;
he discussed each frame showing progressive development in the
Shores and identified individuals involved in early development
. of out Village. The filmed exhibit was most informative and
appreciated by all viewers.
The next meeting of the Historic Preservation Board is set
for December 20, 1982, 7:30 P.M, at the Village Hall.
