09-08-2014 Regular Meeting• • • MIAMI SHORES VILLAGE REGULAR COUNCIL MEETING The Miami Shores Village Council held their regularly scheduled Council Meeting on Monday, September 8, 2014 immediately following the first budget hearing. The meeting was called to order at 7:30 PM with the following individuals in attendance: PRESENT: Herta Holly Jesse Walters Hunt Davis Ivonne Ledesma Jim McCoy ALSO PRESENT: Tom Benton, Village Manager Barbara Estep, Village Clerk Jesus Suarez, Acting Village Attorney PUBLIC INPUT: In accordance with Florida Statute 286.0114, Mayor Holly opened the floor for public comment with respect to items appearing on the Council Agenda. Mayor Holly advised that each speaker would be given 2 minutes. A total of sixteen individuals offered their comments and opinions regarding the proposed marriage equality resolution under consideration, with a vast majority of the individuals expressing their support of the resolution. CONSIDERATIONS 1) VILLAGE CLERK Barbara Estep, MMC A) APPROVAL OF THE JULY 15, 2014 COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES. Councilwoman Ledesma moved approval of the July 15, 2014 Council Meeting Minutes as presented. Councilman McCoy seconded the motion and the vote was unanimous in favor of the motion. 2) VILLAGE COUNCIL Herta Holly A) A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI SHORES VILLAGE COUNCIL SUPPORTING MARRIAGE EQUALITY IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA, AND PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. Ms. Estep read the caption of the Resolution into the record. Mayor Holly spoke of her reasons for bringing this resolution back before the Council for consideration. Following Mayor Holly's comments, she moved approval of the Resolution as presented. Vice Mayor Walters seconded the motion. In turn, Council Members expressed their opinions and thoughts on the issue and the resulting discord which has affected the community. Subsequent to the Council offering their comments on the proposed resolution, Mayor Holly called for the vote which was 4 to 1 in favor of the motion with Councilman McCoy dissenting. • 3) ANNOUNCEMENTS Ms. Estep read the announcements. 4) COUNCIL COMMENTS Hunt Davis None Ivonne Ledesma Councilwoman Ledesma thanked the audience for coming out in support of the resolution and urged the community to be kind to one another. Jesse Walters None Jim McCoy Councilman McCoy indicated that he appreciated the opportunity to express his opinion and that he is grateful for the Miami Shores community. Herta Holly Mayor Holly spoke of the 9/11 video clip to be shown at the Library, her taking the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge initiated by Commissioner Sally Heyman, a breakfast buffet which will be held in lieu of the traditional Community Alliance fundraising gala and urged people to remember to contribute to the various children's cancer efforts. 5) ADJOURNMENT The September 8, 2014 Council Meeting was adjourned at 8:55 PM.
