03-19-2002 Regular MeetingNIIAMI SHORES VILLAGE REGULAR COUNCIL MEETING The regular meeting of the Miami Shores Village Council took place on Tuesday, March 19, 2002 at the Village Hall commencing at 7:30 PM with the following members present: PRESENT: Mayor Al Davis Greg Ullman Bob Blum Prospero Herrera Mark Ulmer ALSO PRESENT: Tom Benton, Village Manager Barbara Fugazzi, Village Clerk Richard Sarafan, Village Attorney CONSIDERATIONS 1) VILLAGE CLERK Barbara Fugazzi A) APPROVAL OF THE MARCH 5, 2002 REGULAR COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES. Mr. Herrera moved approval of the March 5, 2002 Council Meeting Minutes. Mr. Ullman seconded the motion and the vote was unanimous in favor. B) APPOINTMENT (1) TO THE MIAMI SHORES/BARRY UNIVERSITY CHARTER MIDDLE SCHOOL BOARD. The Clerk read the names of the applicants and requested that the Council vote for one individual. Ballots were voted with the following results: Mark Ulmer Al Davis Prospero Herrera Bob Blum Greg Ullman Johnathan Rose Beverly Gowdish Beverly Gowdish Johnathan Rose Johnathan Rose By a majority vote, Mr. Johnathan Rose was appointed to the Miami Shores/Barry University Charter Middle School Board. 2) VILLAGE MANAGER Tom Benton A) DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE ACTION REGARDING THE COUNTRY CLUB TENNIS PROGRAM. • • • • Mr. Benton offered background information regarding the issue and referenced the report submitted by the Recreation Director, Jerry Estep. Mayor Davis confirmed that Mr. Benton was looking for a consensus of the Council as to whether or not he should move forward with the process and negotiate with Professional Course Management. Individual Council Members offered questions and comments regarding the proposed assumption of the tennis program. Some of the concerns expressed were the additional costs, both operational and capital improvement expenses, and the timing of the acquisition. In addition, it was noted that the issue of whether non-residents would be permitted to use the facility would need to be addressed, as non-residents make up the majority of the current players at the Club's courts. As indicated by their discussions, the Council reached a concensus to have the Village Manager negotiate with Professional Course Management regarding the tennis program. 3) ANNOUNCEMENTS The Clerk read the announcements. 4) PUBLIC COMMENTS No one in the audience wished to offer any public comment. 5) COUNCIL COMMENTS Prospero Herrera Mr. Herrera congratulated Mr. Benton on his 30 years of working for the Village and the Staff for Unity Day. He also mentioned the new recycling brochure. Greg Ullman Mr. Ullman also congratulated Mr. Benton. Mr. Ullman announced that March is Women's History Month and that resident Paula Xanthopoulou would be honored at a luncheon, "In The Company of Women". Bob Blum Mr. Blum congratulated the Miami Shores Village swim team on their recent victories. Mark Ulmer Mr. Ulmer stated that he is looking forward to Mr. Benton's next thirty years. Mayor Davis Urged residents to attend the Marshmallow Drop and spoke of the success of Unity Day. 6) ADJOURNMENT The regular meeting of the Village Council held on Tuesday, M Alf 04'1C Barbara A.
