COMMENTS
LOCATION
STATUS
The underside of (2) 8"x 18" roof concrete beams were chipped out
by the contractor approximately 3/4" deep and about 4" wide to
install 1'x2" furring strips for installation of ceiling cedar wood
finish. There were no exposed rebars observed at all the chipped
out sections. To verify the concrete clear cover at the underside of
the beams, safe2core performed a concrete scanning process using
ground penetrating radar to locate the rebars. According to the
report provided, the concrete clear coverage in the beams are 3"
bottom and top and 2" at the side.

During the inspection we observed that metal chairs were cut in

and inspection are required
some locations. These are incorrect type of chairs without anti-
corrosion tip that were installed at the bottom of concrete beams.
during the repair process.
The project manager was advised, that these chairs shall be cut
back, applied with anti -corrosion coating and patched with
approved repair mortar, and will be re -inspected after all repair
work is completed.
Attached are photos for reference and scanning inspection report

GROUND PENETRATING RADAR INSPECTION REPORT
Safe2core performed a Ground Penetrating Radar survey on a 18" x 8" thick tie beam,
on the second floor at the above mentioned project. The (4) areas inspected were 2'
long, the purpose of the inspection was to located the parallel bars at the bottom of the
beam, rebar spacing and concrete cover around the existing bars.
TECHNOLOGY: Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)
GPR works by sending a tiny pulse of energy into a material and recording the strength
and the time required for the return of any reflected signal. A series of pulses over
single area make up what is called a scan. Reflections are produced whenever the
energy pulse enters into a material with different electrical conduction properties or
dielectric permittivity from the material it left. The strength, or amplitude, of the reflection
is determined by the contrast in the dielectric constants and conductivities of the two
materials. While some of the GPR energy pulse is reflected back to the antenna, energy
also keeps on traveling through the material until it either dissipates or the GPR control
unit has closed its time window. (Figure the rate of signal attenuation varies widely and
is dependent on the properties of the material thought which the pulse is passing).
Concrete Scanning using GPR Technology
Using the principals described above, Safe2core Applies GPR Technology to concrete
to locate rebar, Post -Tension cables, conduits, and any other embedded targets in

concrete structures. All scans are performed up to the capabilities and technology
limitations of Ground Penetrating Radar.
EQUIPMENT
All locations were inspected using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) Technology with a
GSSI Model SSMINI equipped with a 1.6. Equipment FCC complaint, FCC ID
QF7MINISIR and/or 1000 MHz Palm Antenna.
RESULTS:
Beam: 18" x 8" thick.
Rebar: Horizontal bottom rebars have 3" concrete cover ( bottom of the beam ).
Stirrups spacing is 6" approx.
