COUNCIL WORKSHOP ON MARKETING
JANUARY 4, 1994
The Council Workshop meeting of the Miami Shores VIIIage
Council was held on January 4, 1994, at the Miami Shores
Community Center commencing at 9:04 p.m. The following
members were present:

ITEM *1 DISCUSSION REGARDING THE MARKETING OF MIAMI SHORES AND
THE "VILLAGE ENRICHMENT PROGRAM". Mayor Heffernan Introduced the
item and gave a brief history of the marketing effort In Miami
Shores. The Village Clerk read Resolution 908-93 Into the record.
Mayor Heffernan stated that the Council should establish short
term objectives, mid-term goals and long term goals. Mr.
Fernandez stated that he has a problem with the Village Manager's
enrichment program. He reviewed the specific problems that he
had. Mr. Johnson stated that the Council needs to resist the
temptation to argue over terminology. Mr. Boyle recommended
hearing from the public first then move on. Mr. Couzzo stated
that what he presented was a first draft as a catalyst to get
input from a number of sources present at the workshop, then
develop a specific plan. He spoke about acquiring alternate
sources of revenue, the police station and community service
needs and hiring a consultant on a monthly basis for three months.

Spoke about leadership of the Council.
Need Marketing Director to tell
volunteers in the community what to do
and to spread the word about the
community.
Spoke about Improvements at the
Country Club and stated that he hopes
that the Club would play a role In
marketing the VIIIage. He stated that
the Club is willing to work together
with the Village in marketing.
Start effort in the Village. People
in the Shores don't know what is
happening in the Shores.
Need to get residents excited about
the Shores. Enrichment needs to come
before marketing.

regarding marketing.
Community services are top notch.
Suggested putting In a High School on
Dog Track property.
Need to build an Image and suggested
"Its a Shore Thing".
Presented marketing ideas: T-shirt,
poster and postcards.
Spoke about Barry University's growth.
He suggested marketing the Police
force. Spoke about annexation.
Stated that Barry is willing to help
with marketing.
Miami Shores is a good location In the
area and it Is the best kept secret of
the County. People have to know about
the community.
Mayor Heffernan stated that Mr. Couzzo has proposed hiring, on a
temporary basis, a Marketing Coordinator. Mr. Fernandez
stated that he was concerned with micro -management of the Village.
He stated that the Council should establish goals and have the
Village Manager implement same. Mayor Heffernan suggested another
workshop to develop goals and objectives. Mr. Boyle stated that
he was very excited about what the Village can do and that there
are some wonderful ideas in the community. Mr. Johnson stated
that lacking an Individual to focus the resources already in the
community that he supports the
Village Manager's idea to retain an individual on a month to month
basis.
The consensus of the Council was to have another workshop after
the next regular Council meeting which will be on January 18th.
