The Country Club workshop of the Miami Shores VIllage
Council was held on Tuesday, May 22, 1989, at Village Hall
commencing at 7:31 with the following members present:
Mayor Henry Courtney
Herb Spahn
Spero Canton
Marty Stoflk
Also present:
Elly F. Johnson
William F. Fann
Mitchell Klug
Mayor Courtney called the meeting to order and turned
the meeting over to Mr. Spahn.
Mr. Spahn questioned Mr. Klug about specific Items in
the budget. He asked why some Items were increasing while
Income Is going down. Mr. Klug responded explaining each
Item.
The Council questioned Mr. Ross Saylor the new golf
course superintendent about his plans for the golf course for
the coming years. Mr. Saylor tacked about his plans.
Mr. Canton asked Mr. Klug what he would do If he owned
the Club. Mr. Klug stated he would open the Club to more
catering to non-members and raise dues for the members.
Mr. Spahn stated that Mr. Klug needs to have a rock
bottom figure for expenses and work with that until sales
Increase.
Mayor Courtney asked Mr. Klug If he understands why the
numbers are as they are. Mr. Klug responded no he didn't.
Mayor Courtney stated that it makes the Council feel worse
that Mr. Klug doesn't understand the numbers.
Ms. Stofik asked Mr. Klug why it cost about $22,000 more
to ralse the same amount of Income between June and July.
There was no response.
Mr. Spahn asked Mr. Klug about the pro shop. Mr.
Johnson and Mr. Klug explained to the Council whats happening
at the pro shop and about the contract situation with the
pro.
Mayor. Courtney asked Mr. Klug to provide to the Council
all of the background Information to backup the figures on
the reports.
Ms. Stofik stated that she has been told the same story
about the Country Club for a long time and she doesn't think
Mr. Klug can solve the problems. Mr. Johnson stated that the
problems are being solved and many of the problems are fixed.
Ms. Stofik asked Mr. Klug if the Council restricts the
Club to Ilve only on Its Income could he survive. Mr. Klug
responded no.
Mr. Spahn told Mr. Klug that he has to do more
Imaginative promoting. Mr. Canton stated the waiters In some
restaurants know the menu and the product very well. Mr.
Spahn stated that the staff at the Club doesn't know about
the special events that are being presented.
Mr. Canton asked Mr. Saylor what plans he has for the
golf course. Mr. Saylor explained In detail what he plans to
do.
Mr. Spahn asked Mr. Kiug to send a letter to members
informing them what they can expect to find on the golf
course. Mr. Spahn stated that the letter should come from
the Greenskeeper.
Mayor Courtney stated that Mr. Klug needs to be aware of
what his public Image Is. Mayor Courtney said Mr. Klug must
have the Image that will bring In additional sales.
Mayor Courtney asked Mr. Klug and Rene Swingle to submit
to the Council specific details behind the figures that are
In the Club financial reports.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:15.
