COUNTRY CLUB WORKSHOP
MAY 9, 1989
The workshop for the Mlami Shores Country Club by the
Miami Shores Village Council was held at Village Hall on
Tuesday, May 9, 1989 at 7:39 with the following members
present: Mayor Courtney
Herb Spahn
Stephen Loffredo
Spero Canton
Also present:
William Fann
Elly F. Johnson
Gall Macdonald
Mitchell Klug
Mayor Courtney called the meeting to order and turned
the meeting over to Mr. Spahn.
Mr. Spahn stated that he is requesting more information
each month In the Country Club report. He then went on to
review his memo to Mr. Johnson of April 18, 1989. Mr. Spahn
stated that In May the figures show the Club Is spending more
money with Tess business coming In.
Mr. Canton asked If there have been any unforeseen expenses
that have occurred to cause the current numbers on the financial
reports. Mr. Klug stated no. Mr. Johnson stated that there has
been an Increase In workers compensation.
Mr. Spahn asked for another workshop on expenses. Monday,
May 22, at 7:30 was chosen for the date and time for the
workshop.
The Council reviewed the numbers on the financial reports
and asked Mr. Klug and Mr. Johnson how the numbers were arrived
at.
Mr. Canton stated that a comprehensive plan for the golf
course Is a tremendous Idea. He said the lack of a plan has
been a problem In the past. Mr. Spahn asked Mr. Klug to have
the comprehensive plan for the middle of June. Mr. Johnson
stated that the plan would be ready by the end of June.
Mr. Spahn asked Mr. Klug how he will advertise the new
programs at the Club. Mr. Klug told the Councll the different
ways he will advertise his programs. Mr. Spahn suggested
working with the recreation department. Mr. Canton stated that
the Club needs a new marketing program. Discussion was held on
evening golf and different Ideas that could bring In new
members.
Mr. Johnson asked the Council If they would approve once a
month, possibly on a Wednesday, having the Club open to non
members In order to show the Club to more people. Mr. Spahn
stated that the management has to have very strict control over
this type of program. Mr. Loffredo stated that the program
should be conducted through the end of the summer. He said that
If there Is no control people will come more than once. Mayor
Courtney stated that there was a consensus of the Council to
have a program which allows nonmembers to come to the Club to
try it out.
Mr. Canton stated that the biggest complaint that he
receives Is the ambiance of the Club. He said that some things
have been done to Improve the Club, but the complaints are still
there. Mr. Klug stated that the Input he has gotten Is to let
the Inside of the Club be subtle and have the view be outside.
Mr. Loffredo stated that this summer Is not the time to
have new capital Improvements with the way that the financial
statements look. He also said that the exterior of the building
In places has paint peeling. Mr. Johnson stated that the doors
that need to be replaced have been ordered and should be in
soon.
Mayor Courtney asked how complaints are handled. Mr. Klug
stated that every complaint Is handled and usually the person Is
called and invited back and If necessary as his guest. Mayor
Courtney stated that a free meal to handle a complaint Is not a
bad Idea. Mr. Canton suggested a free drink as a way to handle
some complaints.
Mr. Klug spoke about nonresident golf members using the
pool. He said that In the past there has been no problem with
them using the pool, but that the new pool manager has enforced
the residency requirements for the use of the pool. Mayor
Courtney stated that until the Issue Is resolved nonresident
golf members should be allowed to use the pool.
Mr. Loffredo asked Mr. Klug if he has a security problem at
night on the golf course. Mr. Johnson and Mr. Klug both said
yes. Mr. Loffredo stated that a resident told him that homeless
people are staying on the golf course at night.
Mayor Courtney asked Mr. Klug about the tennis facilities.
Mr. Klug stated that all problems are in the process of being
resolved.
Mr. Spahn asked Mr. Klug what can be done to get more young
people to come to the Club. Mr. Loffredo talked about the
Cotillion and youth golf. Mr. Johnson stated that In the past a
free 30 day membership has been offered to residents. Mr.
Canton suggested that things for the kids like birthday parties
In conjunction with the pool. Mr. Loffredo suggested expanding
the pool area. Mayor Courtney suggested having dinner and
drinks for parents during Cotillion. Mr. Johnson said that in
the past dinner was tried and there was very little response.
Mayor Courtney suggested vollyball and BBQ facilities for family
picnics. Mr. Fann stated that firm control Is necessary If a
youth program Is going to work.
Mr. Canton asked for a report at the May 22, Country Club
workshop for recommendations from meeting with Mr. Varney, Mr.
Johnson and Mr. Klug on joint programs.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:55 p.m.
