REGULAR COUNCIL MEETING
JANUARY 3, 1989
The regular meeting of the Miami Shores Village Council
was held on Tuesday, January 3, 1989, at Village Hall
commencing at 7:35 PM with the following members present:
Mayor Spero Canton
Stephen Loffredo
Robert S. Butler, Jr.
Karen Kirby
Marty Stofik
Also present: Elly F. Johnson
William F. Fann
The Invocation was delivered by Dr. Harold A. Davenport
of the Miami Shores Community Church. Mayor Canton led the
Pledge of Allegiance.
ITEM *1 MINUTES
Ms. Stofik moved to approve the minutes from the Regular
Council Meeting of 12/20/88. Mr. Loffredo seconded the
motion and the vote was unanimous in favor.
Mayor Canton acknowledged receipt of the following
minutes: Downtown Revitalization Board 12/7/88
Fine Arts Commission 12/4/88
Recreation Advisory Committee 12/12/88
ITEM *2 PRESENTATION OF CERTIFICATES OF APPRECIATION TO THE
WINNERS OF THE VILLAGE BEAUTIFUL COMMITTEE'S ANNUAL OUTDOOR
CHRISTMAS LIGHT CONTEST. Mayor Canton presented awards to
the following winners:

Mayor Canton congratulated all of the winners.
ITEM *3 A RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF MIAMI SHORES VILLAGE,
FLORIDA, APPROVING AND ADOPTING THE EVALUATION AND APPRAISAL
REVIEW REPORT OF THE MIAMI SHORES VILLAGE COMPREHENSIVE PLAN
PREPARED BY ROBERT K. SWARTHOUT, INCORPORATED UNDER DATE OF
JULY 1987. Mr. Johnson read the title of the resolution. Mr.
Loffredo moved to adopt the resolution. Ms. Stofik seconded
the motion. Mr. Pitkin of Robert K. Swarthout, Inc.
recommended that the plan be adopted. The vote was taken and
was unanimous In favor.
ITEM *4 AN ORDINANCE ADOPTING MIAMI SHORES COMPREHENSIVE PLAN
PURSUANT TO THE PROVISIONS OF THE LAWS OF THE STATE OF
FLORIDA; PROVIDING EFFECTIVE DATE. Mr. Johnson read the
title of the ordinance. Mr. Loffredo made a motion to adopt
the ordinance. Ms. Stoftk seconded the motion and the vote
was unanimous In favor.
Ms. Stoftk made a motion to add to the agenda: Discussion on
the Miami Shores Country Club. Mr. Loffredo seconded the
motion
Ms. Kirby arrived at this time In the meeting.
Dr. Butler questioned whether the Country Club Issue was an
emergency. Ms. Stoftk and Ms. Kirby both responded that It
was an emergency. The vote was taken for the motion on the
floor and was unanimous In favor.
Ms. Stoftk asked Mr. Klug how he would Improve revenues In
the few remaining months of the "season". Mr. Klug responded
saying he has booked more catering and more parties from
outside the membership, especially on Saturday nights which
he had previously reserved for member activities. Mr. Klug
went on to say that the Council and the Country Club
management should work together to solve problems In the
future.
PUBLIC COMMENTS ON COUNTRY CLUB ISSUE
Mr. Reno Cocchi, a Miami Shores resident, stated, for the New
Years Eve party the product was not worth the cost.
Mr. Mike Boyle, a Miami Shores resident, said the food at the
Club Is not very good, and the problem goes much deeper than
the price of the New Years party.
Mr. Herb Spahn, a Miami Shores resident, said Mr. Klug Is a
good business man and that January looks slot better for the
Club.
Ms. Carol Griffin, a Miami Shores resident, stated that the
problem with the Club Is a matter of perception. She said
the Club has gone from great to mediocre.
Mr. Joe Lodge, a Miami Shores resident, said the Council
members should spend more time at the Club so they can see
first hand what the problems are.
Mr. Ed. Harrigan, a Miami Shores resident, spoke about a car
that was stolen from the Club.
Ms. Stoftk asked Mr. Klug to report at the next meeting on
January 17th, how preparations are progressing for the
Valentines Day party.
Ms. Kirby asked Mr. Klug tohave a direct mailing to announce
a general meeting of the membership of the club.
Mr. Johnson suggested the 5th Tuesday of the month, January
31, for the general meeting of the membership.
Mayor Canton asked Mr. Fann If the Council has the power to
lease the Club to someone. Mr. Fann responded that It could
be done.

Mr. Gus Griffin a Miami Shores resident stated that the golf
course Is getting better. He went on to say that customer
counts Is a good measure of how a business Is doing and
suggested using customer counts at the Club.
Mr. Arthur Leeds a Miami Shores resident, read a colorful
speech that he had prepared which referred to a letter that
was published In the Sunday paper.
Mr. Kiug asked everyone who has a comment or constructive
criticism to come and see him at the Club.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:24 PM.
