MIAMI SHORES VILLAGE COUNCIL
September 24, 1973
The Miami Shores Village Council held a public hearing at the
Miami Shores Community Center on September 24, 1973, at 8:00 p.m. for
the purpose of reviewing the proposed budget for the fiscal year beginning
October 1, 1973. The following Councilmen were present:
Mayor James W. Condit
Dean R. Claussen
Raymond L. Clement
Elwood Jones
Harry F. Smenner, Jr.
Absent: None
The Village Manager, the Village Attorney and all department heads
were present, as well as approximately 175 Village citizens.
The meeting was opened with an invocation given by Mr. Mike Khoury
and the pledge of allegiance led by Detective Jack Ulmer.
The Mayor introduced members of the Council and Village employees.
He then proceeded with the budget review and explained that according to
Florida law municipalities are limited to 10 mills and that this year we have
set the millage at 7. 9.
Some of the questions brought up from the floor were:
Mr. Don McIntosh, 313 N. E. 92nd Street, asked for last year's
figures on assessments and tax revenue.
Mr. Joe Nordone, 70 N. W. 94th Street, asked where our Federal
revenue sharing money was.
Mrs. Kenneth Bialy, 10286 N. W. 1st Ave. , asked who paid for the
rescue vehicle and the Mayor explained that the Village bought the vehicle

and that the total collection amounting to $21, 009 was spent, except for a
small balance, on equipment that went into the vehicle.

Mr. Warren R. Hale/asked for 11th month figures.
Mr. Frank Holt, 94 N. E. 94th Street, asked if we can get a decrease
in our fire rating.
Mr. John Bergacker, 51009 N. E. 104th St. , stated that consideration
should be given to turning the Fire Department over to Metro.
Mr. M. Merritt, 101 N. E. 105th St. , asked about water from fire
hydr ants.
Mr. L. L. Zimmerman, 94 N. E. 100th St. , asked about disposal
costs.
Susan Carney, 1179 N. E. 98th St. , asked about the game equipment
and swimming expenses in the Recreation budget. Mr. Petrey stated that
this money is donated by civic groups.
Mrs. Gordon Schmitt asked for money in the Recreation budget to
provide a program for children with muscular retardation.
On the Country Club budget Mr. Frank Holt asked about the increase
in dues and requested that the Council consider allowing payment of dues on
a quarterly basis.
Mr. Walter Graff, 1191 N. E. 103rd St. , brought up the expense of
computer service and the high laundry costs and thought study should be given
to setting up our own laundry. The Mayor stated that the Club Manager is
planning on doing this.
Mrs. San Filipo, 9880 N. E. 9th Ave. , asked about the salaries

of shack waitresses and bus boys.
Mr. M. Romero, 1140 N. E. 98th St. , voiced a protest against the
increase in taxes, increase in garbage fees and increase in club dues.
The meeting adjourned at 10:15 p.m.
