MIAMI SHORES VILLAGE COUNCIL
May 5, 1970
A regular meeting of the Miami Shores Village Council was held
at 4:00 o'clock p.m. , May 5, 1970, at the Village Hall, with the following
Councilmen present:
Mayor Don G. Nicholson
Dean R. Claussen
Raymond L. Clement
Edwin B. Cole
Elwood Jones
Mr. Thomas H. Anderson, Village Attorney and Mr. John W.
McIntyre, Village Manager, were also present.
The opening of the meeting by Mayor Nicholson was followed by
an invocation given by Rev. Harold A. Davenport of the Miami Shores
Community Church.
Minutes of the meeting of April 21, 1970, were approved as
written by motion made by Mr. Claussen, seconded by Mr. Jones and passed.
Planning Board minutes.
Approval was recommended by the Planning Board of a plot plan
presented by Barry Swope and Robert Miller for the construction of two
homes on Block 71, Miami Shores Sub. (between 98th and 99th Streets along
Club Drive), together with a proposal to vacate the alley dividing this block.
After some discussion of the setbacks and service areas Mr. Claussen moved
that the Council table action on this plan and that the owners be requested to
appear before the Council. Motion was seconded by Mr. Clement and passed.
Concerning the request for illumination of the Harbour Club Villas

sign erected at 105th Street and Biscayne Blvd. , Mr. Claussen moved that
the Council deny request for illumination of this temporary sign. Motion
was seconded by Mr. Jones and carried.
Recommendation to purchase International Harvester tree crane
at the low bid of $15, 210. 00.
Mr. Claussen moved that the Council authorize purchase of the
tree crane as recommended. Motion was seconded by Mr. Jones and passed
unanimously. The Village Manager reported that we will finance this with
a chattel mortgage, paying off $6000. 00 this year as budgeted.
Request to build additional flower bins along N. E. 2nd Ave.
between 96th Street and 100th Streets plus 13 additional bins
on 96th Street adjacent to N. E. 2nd Avenue.
After discussion Mr. Cole moved that the Council approve going
ahead with the construction of the flower bins as recommended by Mr. Jones.
Mr. Claussen seconded the motion with the suggestion that a first-class
block layer be hired and that he use Durawall on the top layers of the bricks.
The motion was then carried.
Residents' request for Guernsey canal pollution relief.
Mr. Jack Poffenbarger, 1351 N. E. 102nd Street, and Mr. J.
Welldon Currie, 1300 N. E. 103rd Street, petitioned the Council for assistance
in working out a method of removing debris that collects in the waterway
adjoining their property. After some discussion of getting professional help
the Village Manager was instructed to look into the matter with the County
and the Corps of Engineers.
Mr. Jones brought up the subject of getting out information on

the planning survey and zoning hearings. It was generally agreed by the
Council that a special bulletin or letter should go out on this subject.
The meeting adjourned at 5:50 p.m.
