REGULAR MEETING
MIAMI SHORES VILLAGE COUNCIL
June 7, 1955
A regular meeting of the Miami Shores Village Council was
held at 4:00 o'clock P. M. , June 7, 1955, at the Village Hall, with the
following Councilmen present:
Mayor Dean R. Claussen
Michael J. Franco
M. E. Reynolds
S. D. Phillips, Jr.
Absent: William E. Carpenter
Mr. Thomas H. Anderson, Village Attorney, was also present.
Minutes of the last meeting were approved as written upon motion
made by Mr. Franco, seconded by Mr. Reynolds and passed unanimously.
The Library Board represented by Mrs. Shingledecker and Mrs.
Prunty, and the Librarian, Miss O'Connell, presented their 7th Annual report.
Mayor Claussen thanked the Board and the Librarian for this fine and compre-
hensive report and for the wonderful job they are rendering. It was moved by
Mr. Franco, seconded by Mr. Reynolds and unanimously carried that the
report be accepted and a letter of appreciation sent to the Library Board.
It was Mr. Anderson's advice that the State Sanitary Code should be
checked by our Building Inspector to see if it fits in with our Plumbing Code
before passing an ordinance adopting the sanitary code.
Upon motion made by Mr. Reynolds and seconded by Mr. Franco
ORDINANCE NO. 264 was unanimously passed and adopted, same being entitled:
AN ORDINANCE TO VACATE EASEMENT BETWEEN

Mr. J. W. Dillree was again present to ask what had happened
to his suggestion of re-naming Railroad Avenue. The Mayor explained that
.it had been dropped as the Council was not in agreement on a name. However,
he stated that it would be put on the agenda for the next meeting for further
• discussion and action.
Concerning the plan to issue a special bulletin on the status of
the Pension Plan, Mr. Reynolds moved that the Village Manager be instructed
to mail the letter as written. Motion was seconded by Mr. Franco and
passed unanimously.
In regard to the gas for the Country Club, the Village Manager
reported that Brook Gas and Clement Gas are the only bottled gas companies
in this area who furnish underground tanks and he did not see how we could
use surface tanks at the Club. A letter from Southeastern Gas Co. quoted a
price of slightly over 21 a gal. , based on our usage, with tanks on top of the
ground. Mr. McCall also repofrted that the Peoples Gas Co. would supply
pipe'line gas from their system at slightly under 25 per gallon on our volume
and they would pay all installation charges. Sealed bids previously secured
from bottled gas companies were opened as follows:
Brook Gas Co. 20 per gal.
Clement Gas Co. 20 it if
Mayor Claussen asked that this be taken under advisement until
there is a full Council present.
In regard to storm drains, Mr. Reynolds asked if consideration
was given to the low spot in Miami Shores Estates. The Village Manager

reported that the Building Inspector is making a survey on drainage and
streets that need resurfacing.
In regard to the purchase of Block 107 for recreational purposes,
Mr. McCall reported that he had talked to Bessemer Properties and that
they would not agree to accept an appraisal, but that they might come down
to $17, 500. However, the Village Manager was instructed to get an appraisal
from local realtors to see if this is a fair price.
Mr. McCall also stated that Bessemer Properties are interested
in getting their parking lots paved and meters installed, through a cooperative
plan with the Village.
The previously requested appraisal report on the parking lot
behind the Gulf Station listed the lot at a value of $6, 000. After further
discussion, Mr. Reynolds moved that the Village Attorney be instructed to
prepare a resolution for the condemnation of Lot 24, Block 20, Miami Shores
Sub. Motion was seconded by Mr. Franco and passed unanimously.
Mr. Mott, and Mr. Robert Miller were present to discuss a
pending sale of the business property south of the new Metropolitan Life
Insurance building, providing the lot west,of the alley can be used for parking.
This zoning change had been considered at a hearing last year but no change
had been agreed upon and the matter was dropped. The Council instructed
that the property owners in this area be notified that extension of the "X-Zone"
to the north side of 99th Street will be considered again at the next meeting
of June 21 st.
