REGULAR. MEETING
MIAMI SHORES VILLAGE COUNCIL
August 19, 1952
A regular meeting of the Village Council of Miami Shores Village,
Florida, was held at 7:30 o'clock P.M. , August 19, 1952, at the Village Hall
with the following Councilmen present:
Mayor M. E. Reynolds
George A. Frix
William.E.. Carpenter
S. D. Phillips, Jr.
Absent: Michael J. Franco
Upon motion made by Mr. Fri.x, seconded by Mr. Carpenter and
passed unanimously, minutes were approved as written.
Mr. Don James, Pxesident of the Coast Cities Coaches, appeared
before the Council to explain some of his problems in maintaining suburban
bus service.. He stated his equipment is being maintained better since he
took over the operation, the buses are running on time and the schedules
have been arranged to meet the heaviest load of passengers. He claimed his
company carries only about 100 residents of Miami Shores per day and that
this revenue does not warrant better service. This is especially true, he
said, in regard to the N. W. 2nd Ave. line which cannot afford a more frequent
schedule.
However, he stated on inquiry, having the Miami Transit resume
its old routes in the Shores, would hurt his business a great deal. He also
added he didn't think they would want to come up here as the volume of
business would not pay for the service. The Council thanked Mr. James for

appearing and presenting his side of the story.
Mr. S. A. Vetter of the Humane Society explained the increasing
volume of work they are doing with the corresponding increase in expenses.
He stated that 11 years ago the Society asked the Village for a contribution
of $10. 00 a month which has never been increased until this year when the
amount requested was increased to $40. 00 a month. After further discussion,
Mr. Phillips moved we grant this increase. Motion was seconded by
Mr. Carpenter and passed unanimously.
Mr. J. E. Jarkesy appeared for approval to build apartments on
Lots 21, 2Z, 23 and 24, Block 63, using the .Dorsett plan, previously approved
by the Planning Board, but at this time eliminating one door in each unit to
make it appear less-11-like. a motel. Since the plan had been changed, the Council
felt that it should have gone before the Planning Board first and referred it
to that Board.
Mr. R. E.. Alten of 186 N. W. 109th Street told the Council he
was disturbed over a recent incident where a Councilman had requested him
not to put trash on the parkways. It was explained to Mr. Alten that since he
has an alley behind his house he should put the trash there and that all the
residents would be requested to do the same where this is possible.
Mr. Carpenter asked that some "Children at Play" signs be put
up in the alleys between 108th and 109th Streets from N. W. 1st Ave. to
N. E. 2nd Ave.
Mr. Carpenter also mentioned a complaint that the residence at
