REGULAR MEETING
MIAMI SHORES VILLAGE COUNCIL
May 1, 1951
A regular meeting of the Village Council of Miami Shores Village,
Florida, was held at 7:30 o'clock P.M. , May 1, 1951, at the Village Hall,
with the entire Council present.
Mr. Nadeau attended in the absence of Mr. Anderson, Village
Attorney.
Upon motion made by Mr. Phillips, seconded by Mr. Franco and
carried, reading of the minutes of the last regular meeting was dispensed
with and they were approved as written.
Mr. William Knowlson of 254 N. E. 101st Street appeared before
the Council to appeal the Planning Board decision refusing him permit for
a side door into a bedroom of his home. Mr. Knowlson explained that he had
a letter from the neighbors to the effect that they had no objection to his
request and that he needed this entrance to the bedroom so that he could sleep
there only and rent the rest of the house. After discussion of this case, Mr.
Frix moved we grant Mr. Knowlson permit to put a side door into a bedroom
of his home inasmuch as it is to be considered a hardship case and that the
Planning Board be so notified of our action and of the reason for same. Motion
was seconded by Mr. Franco and passed unanimously.
Mr. Sam Dreyer of 478 N. E. 92nd Street spoke to the Council about
the condition of the alley behind his home. He stated he must use this for
entrance to his garage and it is very uneven and full of sharp stones. He con-
tinued that the switching of railroad cars on the spur near 92nd Street during

the night and early morning is causing a nuisance, as well as, an eyesore
when the cars are left there for several days. Mr. Dreyer contended that
various firms outside the Shores were using this as an unloading spot for
their supplies. The Village Manager stated we have an agreement with the
Railroad not to do any switching at night and he reported that he had recently
contacted one of the railroad men about this complaint. Council instructed
that the Village Manager look into this further in an effort to eliminate- the
use of this spur by firms in other municipalities.
Mr. Dreyer also asked if his broken sidewalk could be fixed by a
contractor for the Village. Council explained the problem involved in financ-
ing this project and suggested that he have his sidewalks repaired by his
own contractor. Council referred Mr. Dreyer's request for sidewalks on the
corners to the streets to the Village Manager for better maintenance of the
grass to eliminate the complaint brought up.
Concerning Mr. Dreyer's request for an improved alley, Council
stated the Village will pave all alleys within the next two years.
The next item of business was approval of the final plans for a hotel
on N. E. 87th Street west of Biscayne Blvd. These plans were approved by
the Planning Board at their last meeting. Mr. Frix moved that a permit be
granted for the construction of this hotel in accordance with recommendation
of the Planning Board. Motion was seconded by Mr. Phillips and unanimously
passed.
Mr. Marion Arnold, who was authorized by the Village to negotiate
in a recent sidewalk accident case, reported that he had contacted Mrs. Zaeh,

would attempt to collect half of this amount from the oil company on whose
property the woman fell. Mr. Carpenter moved that the Village Manager be
authorized to proceed with the settlement. Motion was seconded by Mr. Frix
and passed unanimously.
It was reported, in regard to the traffic situation at Miami Ave. and
91st Street, that a traffic light could not be secured from the County but that
one of our officers was on duty there each morning.
Meeting adjourned at 8:25 P.M.
