PUBLIC NEETING ON PROPOSED BUS CHANGE
August 23, 1949
A public meeting was held at the Miami Shores Couhtry Club, August
23, 1949 at 8:00 o'clock P.M. for the purpose of discussing the proposed bus
change. The following members of the Council were preseat:
George A. Fria, Mayor
M. E. Reynolds
William E. Carpenter
Michael J. Franco .
Absent: Roy Mackenzie
The meeting was opened by Mayor Frix who explained that the Council
was ready to make a report on the results of its efforts in the matter of
securing the best possible bus service for Miami Shores. He stated that a joint
meeting had been held with officials of the two bus companies which he had been
unable to attend so turned the meeting over to Mr. Reynolds for details of what
had transpired.
Mr. Reynolds then went over the facts brought out in that meeting,
that our franchise with the Transit Company covered only the No. ll route which,
he added, was not under the jurisdiction of the Fla. Railroad Commission because
at the point it entered the Shores our boundary with the City of Miami is contig-
uous. All other routes, by reason of the fact that they covered two or more munici-
palities, were under jurisdiction of the Commission. The plan as devised, so that
both companies could operate profitably, allows the Coast Cities buses to go as far
as 79th St., at which point all passengers going beyond that point southwould have
to transfer to a Transit bus with, of course, the exception of the No. 11 route
which will continue substantially as is. Fares into Miami for destinations south of
79th St. are to be increased to 150, as well as the outbound fares to Miami Shores.
Mayor Frix read the resolution that had been passed by the Council and
sent to the Railroad Comanission in protest of this proposed change.

Various citizens voiced their objections to the plan with the general
consensus being that the Villagers and Council should present a stronger appeal
to the Commission for reconsideration of the proposal. Thereupon Mr. MscLupfer
formally moved that there be a CitizensCommittes appointed to work along with
the Council in trying to solve this problem and suggested that the committeemen
be iron each section affected by the change. Motion was seconded by Mr. H. Z.
Rapalyea and carried unanimously. It was Mayor Frixts thought that the Committee
should be named from those present at this meeting and tentatively appointed the
followings
Mr. George F. Meister, 30 N. E. 96th St.
Mr. G. R. Khoury, 149 N. E. 99th St.
Mr. MacLupfer, 540 N. E. 96th St.
Mr. H. H. Rapalyea, 129 N. W. 98th St.
Mr. B. Wyckoff, 175 N. W. 101st St.
Mr. George F. Meister was later elected by the Committee as Chairman.
Mayor Frix then mentioned briefly the Volunteer Fire Department that
had been established and asked for more volunteers to cover both the day and night
crews.
At the request of Mr. Rapalyea for a traffic light at the Concourse
and 96th St., Mayor Frix stated he would have the Chief of Police make a survey
and recommendations.
One of the citizens asked about the increasing truck traffic on 111th St,
since it had been paved.
It was also pointed out that a traffic light was needed at N.W. 2nd
Ave. and 95th St. as there have been 5 accidents there this summer. Mayor Frix
stated that this would be taken into consideration.
Meeting adjourned at 9:25 P.M.
