( Dunkelberger) has provided oversight and related testing services in connection with the vibro- replacement ground modification work that was conducted for the new three story dormitory project at Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida. This report overviews the ground modification activities that were completed, provides results of cone penetrometer tests that were performed to evaluate the ground improvement attained and furnishes our opinion regarding the ability of the improved profile components to safely support the building foundations. PROJECT CONSIDERATIONS The project involves the construction of a three story, U- shaped dormitory building with a typical floor area of 21,500 square feet. Construction of the dormitory employs tilt up concrete panels for the perimeter walls and a system of isolated columns. These components will carry hollow core floors with a two -inch thick concrete topping. We understand that the perimeter walls and interior columns of the structure will impart maximum loads of 10 kips per foot and 450 kips to their foundations, respectively. SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS Subsurface conditions at the location of the dormitory were explored with five 30 -foot deep and two 35 -foot deep Standard Penetration Test borings. These disclosed the building area to be mantled by several inches of organic fine sand (topsoil). The topsoil is underlain by loose to locally medium dense fine sand with variable amounts of limestone and shell fragments that extend to depths of 7 to 10.5 feet below grade. Loose to very loose fine to medium sands occur next in the profile and persist to 25.5 to 32.5 beneath the ground surface. Over the remaining depths explored, the borings encountered a formation of weakly to moderately well cemented sandy limestone. State of Florida Board of Professional Engineers Authorization No. 6870 Toll Free (877) 643.6832 Moss and Associates Oversight and Related Testing Services During Vibro- Replacement Operations June 27, 2011 FOUNDATION DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS Page 2 Owing to the low strength and high compressibility of the sandy profile components, support of the dormitory on spread footings without significant pre- treatment of the subsoils was not feasible. Consequently, we recommended that the structure be supported on shallow spread foundations with the column footing designed for an allowable bearing pressure of 10,000 pounds per square foot (psf) and the wall footings for an allowable bearing pressure 6,000 psf. GROUND IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM Requirements The project specifications required that the vibro- replacement operations be accomplished with a 150- horsepower (minimum) vibroflot exerting a centrifugal force of not less than 22 tons. Treatment of the profile components in the foundation areas was to extend from the footing bottoms to the surface of the limestone formation that the exploratory borings encountered at 25.5 to 32.5 feet below grade. Add fill used in the compaction points was to consist of crushed limestone meeting the gradational requirements for Number 57 coarse aggregate within the Florida Department of Transportation Standard Specifications for Roadways and Bridges. The adequacy of the ground improvement was to be verified with cone penetrometer soundings performed in general accordance with ASTM 3441. An average post- treatment cone penetrometer tip resistance of 120 tons per square foot (tsf) was prescribed in the sands underlying the column footings when tested anywhere in the compaction patterns. A lesser average post- treatment tip resistance on 60 tsf was considered adequate for the subsoils in the areas of the wall foundations. Execution The general contractor for the project, Moss and Associates, engaged Hayward Baker, Inc. (Hayward Baker) to carry out the required ground modification work. Hayward Baker prepared a ground modification plan for the project and presented that plan on its Drawing VR -1 (Barry University Residence Hall) dated May 20, 2011. Center -to- center spacings for the vibro- replacement points were specified to be roughly 6.0 to 7.0 feet depending on the footing type. Vibro - replacement operations for the project began on June 9, 2011 and were pursued unto completion on June 15, 2011. During this period, Hayward Baker completed 237 vibro- replacement points in the foundation areas within the dormitory footprint. These, to the best of our knowledge, are all the vibro- replacement points required by the original ground modification plan. The vibro - replacement points were completed with an S -23 vibroflot which has a 161 horsepower motor capacity and imparts a centrifugal force of 23 tons. The vibroflot was equipped with bottom and top water jets together with appropriate extensions and follow up pipes. The vibroflot was powered by a diesel electric generator with a maximum output of 400 amps. DUNKELBERGER Moss and Associates Oversight and Related Testing Services During Vibro- Replacement Operations June 27, 2011 Page 3 At each point, the vibroflot was advanced to the required depth using a combination of jetting, vibration and self - weight. Once the required treatment depth was reached, backfill consisting of Florida Department of Transportation Number 57 coarse aggregate was added to the compaction crater by a front end loader operating from the ground surface. The backfill was intensely compacted with the vibroflot in one to two foot vertical lifts as the probe was slowly and sequentially withdrawn. Dunkelberger personnel provided daily surveillance of the vibro- replacement operations and maintained detailed records of such information as probe depth, backfill consumption, vibroflot withdrawal rate and electrical current amperage during free swing and compaction performance. Backfill consumption varied from a low of 0.23 cubic yard per vertical foot of treatment to a high of 0.58 cubic yard per vertical foot with most of the consumption values being about 0.30 cubic yard per vertical foot. Vibroflot withdrawal rates ranged from a low of 2.8 feet per minute to a high of 7.0 feet per minute with most being around 4 feet per minute. Maximum amperage readings during the lift compaction typically were on the order of 200 amps. Amperage during free swing in the air was generally about 100 amps. CONE PENETROMETER TESTING Ground improvement attained by vibro- replacement was assessed with fifteen (15) cone penetrometer soundings (designated CPT -1 through CPT -15) that were conducted with a truck mounted, mechanical cone penetrometer equipped with a friction mantle (ASTM D 3441). The CPT sounding locations and depths are described in the table below. The soundings were completed on June 17, 2011. DUNKBGBERGER Moss and Associates Oversight and Related Testing Services During Vibro- Replacement Operations June 27, 2011 Page 4 Locations of the cone penetrometer soundings were selected based upon review of the vibro- replacement information with consideration given to: 1) average add fill consumption for the points, 2) amperage reading during compaction and 3) withdrawal rates of the vibroflot. Generally speaking, the locations of the soundings that were chosen represent average to worse case conditions of add fill consumption (low), amperage reading (low) and withdrawal rate (high). Detailed records of the cone penetrometer soundings are provided in the Appendix. The cone penetrometer resistances presented on the sounding logs are in units of tons per square foot (tsf). POST IMPROVEMENT EVALUATION The cone penetrometer test results were evaluated from the footing bearing levels (which range roughly from 1.75 feet to 2.25 feet below existing grade) to about 10 feet beneath the bottoms of the wall footings and two foundation widths below the bases of the column footings. Review of the sounding logs shows that most of the CPT readings exceeded the minimum required tip resistance of 60 tsf prescribed for the wall footings and 120 tsf for the column footings. There were, however, some exceptions. The average tip resistance was not achieved for soundings CPT -2, CPT -4, CPT -10 and CPT -15 within the upper 7 to 9 feet of the profile. These cone penetrometer test locations were generally characterized by a vibroflot withdrawal rate of 5 to 6 feet per minute during the installation of the "stone columns ". SUPPLEMENTAL VIBRO - REPLACEMENT TREATMENT Locations at which the vibroflot withdrawal rates exceeded 5 feet per minute were identified from the daily field records and supplemental vibro - replacement prescribed for these areas. Generally speaking, supplemental points were added to either side of the suspected stone columns in the wall footing areas and at the centroid of the arrays in the column foundation areas Based on our recommendations, Hayward Baker completed the supplemental work on June 21, 2011 under the surveillance of a Dunkelberger representative. The location of the supplemental vibro - replacement columns is shown in the table on the next page. The treatment depths of the stone columns extended to 7 feet below grade. Based upon our field observations and tests, we are of the opinion that the improved profile components can safely support wall footings designed for a net allowable bearing pressure of 6,000 psf and column footings designed for a net allowable bearing pressure of 10,000 psf. Subgrade soils existing at the bearing levels of the foundations should be densified with hand led vibratory compaction equipment prior to placement of reinforcing steel and concrete. The subgrade soils should be compacted to not less than 95 percent of the ASTM D 1557 maximum dry density to a depth of 12 inches. oOo We trust that the information presented herein is sufficient for your needs, Should it require any clarification or amplification, please contact us. 3 J. esfi0 GEN4.1*.e' No 27451 S Very truly yours, DUNKELBERGER ENGINEERING & TESTING, INC.
