Dear Gentlemen: Pursuant to your request and authorization, Terra Tech Consultants, Inc., conducted a subsurface investigation at the above referenced project. The investigation was performed on August 21st, 2013. The purpose of the investigation was to examine and document the existing soil conditions at the site and provide you with geotechnical recommendations for supporting the proposed addition of a new swimming pool to the existing single- family residence at this location. To achieve the desired objective two (2) standard penetration test borings were performed in the proposed swimming pool area. The logs are enclosed along with this report. TEST METHOD: The borings were conducted in accordance with procedures outlined for standard penetration test and spilt spoon sampling of soils by ASTM Method D -1586. A two (2') feet long two (2 ") inches O.D. Spilt Spoon Sampler was driven into the ground by successive blows with a 140 lb. Hammer dropping thirty (30 ") inches. The soil sampler was driven two (2') feet at a time then extracted for visual examination and classification of the retained soil sample. The numbers of blows required for one (1') foot penetration of the sampler is designated as "N" (Known as the standard penetration resistance value). The "N" Value provides an indication of the relative density of non- cohesive soils and the consistency of cohesive soils. Suitable corrections are applied to this number in order to include the effects of soil overburden pressure and other factors. A general evaluation of soils is made from the established correlation between "N" and the relative density of consistency of soils. F•O• Box 972286 ♦ Miami, FL 331,97 + 0f:Rce 3051256 -2633 + Fax 303123Z -5995 'r - .,.r.0 -Inc. Mr. Rodrigo Mera Page 2 August 2e, 2013 TEST METHOD (CONTINUED): This dynamic method of soil testing has been widely accepted by foundation engineers and architects to conservatively evaluate the bearing capacity of soils. A continuous drilling and sample procedure was used. The samples were taken at intervals of two (2') feet, or at every change of soil characteristics. SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS: The appended boring logs present factual information and description of the subsurface conditions at the specific test boring locations. However, review of the boring logs indicate a relatively uniform layer of dark brown silica sand with traces of grass from 0' -0" to 0' -6 ", tan to beige silica sand from 0' -6" to 4'- 0 "; followed with a layer of tan to brown silica sand extending from 4' -0" to about 6' -0 ". Finally, from 6' -0" to 15' -0" which was the conclusion of the soil boring penetration we have a mixture of tan to beige silica sand with small rock fragments. At the time of drilling, the average ground water level at the site was seven (7') feet and seven (7 ") inches (see boring logs). Fluctuation in the observed water table should be expected due to seasonal climatic changes, rainfall variation, surface water run -off and other specific factors relative to the site in question. Therefore, these depths should not be relied upon for dewatering or construction purposes. BASIS FOR FOUNDATION RECOMMENDATIONS: It is our understanding that the proposed construction consists of a swimming pool addition to the existing house and that the proposed foundations consists of continuous footing and monolithic slab foundation system for the support of the swimming pool system. The following evaluation of subsurface conditions is based on the encountered subsoil conditions, field data and previous experience with similar structures. In evaluating the test boring data we have used correlations previously developed between standard penetration resistance values and the engineering performance characteristics of soils/rock similar to those at this site. The discovery of any site and/or subsurface conditions during construction, which deviates from data obtained in this exploration, should be reported to us for our evaluation. As a mutual Protection to clients, tine Public and ourselves, all reports are submitted as the confidential Property of clients, and authorization for publication of statements, conclusions or extracts from or regarding our reports is reserved pending our written approval. ITC-Inc. Mr. Rodrigo Mera Page 3 August 26", 2013 CONCLUSIONS & RECOMMENDATIONS: Based on the subsurface exploration and subsoils encountered, we are pleased to report that the subsurface conditions at this site are favorable for shallow, continuous, spread and monolithic slab footings. However, there will be the need to remove the soft/loose material to a depth of at least 6' -0" to 7' -0" below from the existing grade where these soft/loose materials were encountered. The area should then be backfilled with a clean inorganic mixture of silica sand, lime sand and lime rock. If underwater, backfill of soil can be by using #57 stone or 3/4" pea -rock gravel. We further suggest that the swimming pool base slab and continuous footing be poured monolithically with the base slab resting on 36" thick layer of new lime rock fill below the foundation level. Should this be accomplished we believe this to be a satisfactory foundation solution and shall be designed for an allowable bearing pressure not to exceed 2000 p.sf. (Pounds per square foot). Other considerations for the backfill and preparation of sub -base are suggested as follows: 1. Locate the pool and deck area and excavate and remove the soft/loose material within the pool area plus 2' -0" to 3'4" outside the footprint of the pool to a depth of approximately 6' -0" to 7' -01 . 2. All excavations shall maintain a minimum of 2 horizontal to 1 vertical (2:1) next to foundations to prevent undermining of existing foundations. If the required slope recommendations cannot be maintained, then shoring of the existing foundations may be required to prevent undermining. 3. Depending on the water table elevation at the time of excavation de- watering may be required to properly excavate the loose silica sand along with any other foreign material and compact the backfill material. 4. Any additional new fill material required to attain finished floor grade shall be a suitable, free - draining material, defined as that which meets the requirements of ASTM D -2487 Unified Classifications GW, GP, GP -GM or SW, containing no more than 2% organic matter and with no debris. It should have a maximum size of one (1) inch and shall contain no more than five (5 %) fines passing a U.S. Standard No. 200 sieve (0.075mm). This fill material shall be placed in lifts not exceeding 12- inches in loose thickness, with each lift compacted to a least 98% of maximum density as determined by AASHTO T -180 and ASTM D -1557. 5. The ground floor slabs may be constructed directly on compacted existing soil or compacted structural fill after site preparation. 6. After topsoil and vegetation removal, the exposed surface should be rolled adequately with a heavy vibratory roller in order to help increase the density and improve the uniformity of the relatively loose near surface sands. As a mutual Protection to clients, the Public and ourselves, all reports are submitted as the confidential property of clients, and authorization for publication of statements, conclusions or extracts from orxegarding our reports is reserved pending our written approval. C --Inc. Mr. Rodrigo Mera Page 4 August 2e, 2013 7. It is also recommended that non - vibratory compaction equipment be used to avoid disturbance of soils and prevent transmission of vibrations to existing neighboring residences. 8. Where possible, pour footing concrete directly against excavation sidewalls. The footings shall contain at least minimum reinforcing steel as per applicable codes and standards. We suggest that the geotechnical engineer inspect and approve all foundation bearing surfaces and floor sub grades prior to the placement of reinforcing steel, concrete or pavement. Remove and replace any soils incapable of supporting the anticipated loads, the geotechnical engineer shall determine the method of replacement. CLOSURE: Our evaluation of the site subsurface conditions has been based on our understandings of the site, project information furnished by: Mr. Rodrigo Mera and the data obtained in this geo- technical exploration at the location proposed by the project engineer. Changes in the submitted project details or the discovery of any site or varying subsurface conditions prior to and I or during construction, which deviate from the data obtained in this exploration, should be immediately reported to us for re- evaluation. Regardless of the thoroughness of geotechnical exploration there is always a possibility that conditions on the subject property (site) may be different from those at the test location reported in our boring log. This report was prepared exclusively for the use of Mr. Rodrigo Mera and other members of the design team for the specific application of a proposed new swimming pool to be located at 225 NE 96`" Street, Miami Shores, Florida. No other warranties, expressed, or implied, are made. Whit the services of Task Laboratories, Inc. are a valuable and integral part of the design and construction teams, we do not warrant, guarantee or insure the quality, completeness, or satisfactory performance of construction plans and specification which we have not prepared, nor the ultimate performance of building site materials. SUBSURFACE' EX PLORATION Subsurface exploration is normally accomplished by the borings: test pits are sometimes employed The rrethod of determining the boring location and the surface elevation at the boring is noted in the report. This information is represented on a drawing or on the boring log. The location and elevation of the borings should be considered accurate only to the degree inherent with the method used The soil boring log includes sampling information. description of the materials and recovered. approximate depths of boundaries between sod and rock strata and groundwater data. The log represents conditions specifically at the location and the boring was made. The boundaries between different soul strata are indicated at specific depths: however, these depths are in fact approximate and dependent upon the frequency of sampling. The transition between soul strata is often gradual. Water level readings are mado at the time and under conditions stated on thee, boring logs. Water levels change with time, precipitation, canal level, local well drawdown and other factors. LA.BORATORI' AND FIELD TESTS Tests are performed- in i accordance with specific ASTM Standards unless otherwise indicated. An criteria included in a givetn ASTM Standard are not always required and performed. Each test report indicates the measurefnent and determination actually made. ANALYSIS AjWD RECOMMENDATIONS The geotechnical report is prepared primarily to aid in the design of site work and structural foundations. Although the information in the report is expected to be sufficient for these purposes, it is not intended to determine the cost of construction or to stand alone as a construction specification. Report recommendations are based primarily on data from test borings made at the location shown on the test boring reports. Soil variations may exist between borings and may not become evident until construction. If variations are then noted, the geotechnical engineer should be contacted so that field conditions can be examined and recommendations revised if necessary, The geotechnical report states our understanding as to the location, dimensions and structural features proposed for the site. Any significant changes in the nature, design, or location of the site improvements must be communicated to the geotechnical engineer so that the geotechnical analysis, conclusions, and recommendations can be appropriately adjusted CONSTRUCTiON- OBSERVATION Construction observation and testing is an important element of geotechnical services. The geotechnical engineer's field representative ('J':.F.R.) is the "owners representative` observing the work of the contractor, performing tests and reporting data from such tests and observations. The geotechnical engineer's field representative does not direct the contractor's construction means, methods, operafions or personnef. The G.E.F.R. does not interfere with the relationship between the owner and the contractor and, except as an observer, does not become a substitute owneron site. The G.E.F.R. is responsible for htsiher safety, but has no responsibility for the safety of other personnel at the site. The G.E.F.R. is an important member of a team whose responsibility is to observe and test the work being done and report to the owner whether that work is being carried out in general conformance with the plans and specifications.
