According to Crowther Roofing, the new fascia members installed match the existing fascia members which were removed and the existing plywood sheathing was not nailed to the existing fascia members. The attachment of the wood fascia to the roof trusses was engineered by others and is not part of the scope of this report. As the structure is being loaded by wind forces, the roof sheathing acts as a diaphragm which transfers the wind forces to the roof trusses. The roof trusses then transfer the wind forces to the nearest bearing point. The transfer of diaphragm force to the bearing point is typically done through the truss connectors and / or blocking located at the bearing point, not the eave. Since the existing plywood was not nailed to the existing wood fascia, it is our opinion that the existing diaphragm did not require blocking at the plywood edges. Therefore, the plywood roof sheathing does not need to be attached to the new wood fascia as it does not contribute to the transfer of the diaphragm forces to the structure. The connection of the plywood to the roof trusses, the connection of the trusses to the bearing point, and the loads being transferred to the bearing point, were not altered by the replacement of the wood fascia. Therefore, based on the information regarding the new and existing conditions stated above, it is our opinion that the existing plywood does not need to be nailed to the new wood fascia members.
