Comment 6 states as follows: 6. Indicate the elevation of the exterior grade with respect to the proposed finish floor for accessibility. It is our belief that these guardhouses will not need to comply with accessibility standards based on exception 7 of 201.1.1 Vertical Accessibility of the 2010 Florida Building Code: Accessibility. This exception references 203.3 Raised Areas which states the following: "Areas raised primarily for purposes of security, life safety, or fire safety, including but not limited to, observation or lookout galleries, prison guard towers, fire towers, or life guard stands shall not be required to comply with these requirements or to be on an accessible route." The structure will be a pre - engineered metal building that measures 4 feet by 6.2 feet in plan and is about 8 feet tall. It will be erected on a one foot thick mat footing that has horizontal dimensions of 5 feet by 7.2 feet. The mat foundation is projected to impose a contact pressure of 100 pounds per square feet on the subgrade soils. Subsurface conditions in the area of the proposed guardhouse were explored with a single auger boring that was manually drilled to eight feet below grade. As the boring was advanced, cone penetrometer tests were conducted in the profile components to assess their shear strength and relative density. The tests were performed with a Brainard - Kilman Model S -214 hand held penetrometer. A log of the boring containing the cone penetrometer test results is attached. Reference to the log shows that the boring encountered clean fine to medium sands over the fmal depth of exploration. The sands are very loose in the upper two feet of the profile and loose to medium dense thereafter. Prior subsurface exploration that we have completed in the project locale indicates that the sands continue to about 26 feet below grade where they are underlain by a formation of moderately well cemented limestone. Groundwater in the site area is typically found at nine feet beneath the existing ground surface. Although the sandy overburden soils are somewhat loose, they should provide satisfactory support to a shallow mat foundation based not less than one foot below the lowest adjacent grade that imposes a contact pressure of 100 pounds per square foot. The upper twelve inches of the subgrade soil on which the foundation rests should be compacted to not less than 95 percent of the ASTM D 1557 maximum dry density prior to placing reinforcing steel and structural concrete for the mat. The structure will be a pre - engineered metal building that measures 4 feet by 6.2 feet in plan and is about 8 feet tall. The tests were performed with a Brainard -Kilman Model S -214 hand held penetrometer. A log of the boring containing the cone penetrometer test results is attached. Reference to the log shows that the boring encountered clean fine to medium sands over the final depth of exploration. Your structural engineer, Mr. Mark Johnson, P.E. has indicated that the structure will be 6 feet by 8 feet in plan dimensions and 8 feet high. We estimate that the structure will have a gross weight of not more than 25,000 pounds. Subsurface exploration that we have previously conducted for the new residence hall disclosed a stratigraphic profile consisting of 26 feet of mostly loose clean sands overlying a formation of moderately well cemented limestone. Groundwater at the site was typically found at nine feet beneath the existing ground surface. Although the sandy overburden soils are somewhat loose, they should provide satisfactory support to a shallow mat foundation designed for an allowable bearing pressure of 600 pounds per square foot based not less than one foot below the lowest adjacent grade. The upper twelve inches of the subgrade soil on which the foundation rests should be compacted to not less than 95 percent of the ASTM D 1557 maximum dry density prior to placing reinforcing steel and structural concrete for the mat. If the above recommendations are implemented, we estimate that the mat foundation will experience a total settlement of not more than one half inch and negligible differential settlement. oOo Very truly yours, DUNKELBERGER ENGINEERING & TESTING, INC 44444 r-ditgalz Juan Ramirez, E.I.
