A. } CC OSMOSE OP K -33 PRESSURE PRESERVED WOOD continued from Page 3 Overall Product in Use Maintenance Free Material treated with Osmose K -33 needs no finishing for a maintenance -free sur- face. If desired, it may readily be stained or painted according to manufacturers' recommendations. Permanent, Highly Effective The chemical reaction that fixes K -33 in the cell structure of the wood makes Osmose K -33 a permanent preservative. It does not leach and can be used in the ground as well as in contact with fresh or salt water with no loss of preserva- tive qualities. In tests by the U.S. Depart- ment of Agriculture, Forest Products Laboratory, Osmose K -33 type preserva- tives have had no failures after 21 years in contact with the ground. K -33 provides more than 300% longer life than un- treated wood. Clean, Odorless, Safe Osmose K -33 is a clean preservative ! K -33 treated wood is clean to handle, dry to the touch and emits no offensive odors or irritating fumes. While highly toxic to fungi and wood- destroying in- sects, it is safe and non - irritating to humans, animals and green plants. Presents No Fire Hazard Since K -33 is carried into the wood in a water solution, it is not subject to the increased combustibility connected with oil -borne preservatives. Strong The Osmose K -33 chemical process does not reduce the strength properties of wood products. Conductivity The electrical conductivity of treated wood of any species is not significantly increased above that normally attributed to any given moisture content. m Assembly, Installation Osmose K -33 lumber and plywood can be installed as easily as untreated wood using regular tools and following ac- cepted building practices. Cutting and drilling before treatment insures thorough protection of all joints and bolt holes when heavy timber is to be treated. When site fabrication is required, all cuts should be liberally coated with a concentrated solution of K -33. Osmose K -33 lumber and plywood is readily glued with quality adhesives. It is recommended that 4 to 8 hours prior to gluing the material be lightly dressed or sanded, then brushed clean, and that the moisture content be within the glue manufacturers' recommendations. Osmose K -33 treated wood is no more corrosive to metal fasteners than is un- treated lumber. Under exterior or wet conditions, direct contact with aluminum should be avoided. m Coatings, Surfaces Commercial paints or stains can be applied by following manufacturers' recommendations regarding moisture content of the surface to be painted or stained. Inform treatment plant of drying requirements. Technical Support Specifications All lumber and plywood herein specified for treatment shall be impregnated with Osmose K -33 which meets or exceeds both American Wood Preservers Asso- ciation standard P5 and Federal Specifi- cation TT -W -550. Osmose K -33 shall be applied in a closed cylinder by vacuum - pressure process, full cell method, in accordance with AWPA Standard C2 -74. The retention of Chromated Copper Arsenate dry salts shall be .23 pounds per cubic foot of wood (oxide basis) for moderate service conditions (weather exposure), and .40 pounds per cubic foot of wood (oxide basis) for severe condi- tions (in constant contact with ground or water). Where it is found necessary to frame Osmose- treated lumber on the job, Osmose Special K -33 preservative shall be liberally brushed onto all cut sur- faces, bolt holes and machined areas. LUMBER SOUTHERN PINE LUMBER DOUGLAS FIR Where shrinkage is a serious fault as in flooring or sub - flooring all lumber shall be dried to a 15 -19% moisture content. Where Osmose K -33 treated lumber will be in contact with plaster terrazzo or stucco or where finish schedule calls for Osmose treated lumber to be painted, excess moisture shall be removed. In most uses, lumber 2" nominal and less shall be dried to 15 -19% moisture con- tent and knots and pitch streaks shall be sealed as with untreated wood. For marine specifications, contact Osmose. COLOR VARIATIONS BASED ON SPECIES PLYWOOD DOUGLAS FIR PLYWOOD SOUTHERN PINE 6.5 /Os 7 DT Document This brochure provides detailed specifi- cations covering Osmose K -33 Pressure Preserved Wood and Osmose Flame- proof Fire Retardant Wood. It has been prepared to help the architect, engineer and builder in the proper application and use of pressure treated lumber and ply- wood. Osmose K -33 and Flameproof are classified as water borne treatments applied to the wood by a highly scientific vacuum and pressure operation that forces the chemicals deep into the cellu- lar structure of the wood changing the characteristics of wood so it is imper- vious to attacks from rot, decay and insects, and not susceptible to the com- mon destruction caused by fire. Manufacturer Since 1937, Osmose has been a leader in Research and Development of preser- vative and fire retardant chemicals. Dis- tribution of the chemical formulation and treating processes are made by over 90 Osmose franchised treating plants from coast to coast who offer local availability of prssure treated wood with fast, dependable service and technical assist- ance on proper specifications and appli- cations. Lumber and plywood pressure treated at each Osmose plant adheres to the rigid quality requirements set by the American Wood Preservers Association Standards. An experienced staff of Os- mose engineers checks each plant op- eration on a regular schedule to assure that all treating procedures meet these standards. The research department of Osmose continually checks specimens of treated wood, including treating and chemical balance reports from each plant to assure there is no variation from the quality demanded by Osmose cus- tomers. Newly installed treating plants are automated to eliminate all possibility of human error during the treating proc- ess. Push button controls accurately gov- ern treating cycles, pressures and retentions for each species to extremely close tolerances, thus assuring continued high quality treated wood products. Also, interior non - loadbearing partitions, interior trim, fin- ishing materials and doors. All segments of the building industry have need for Osmose Flameproof wood: homes, apart- ments, commercial, institutional, indus- trial buildings. Specific applications: • decking • beams • partitions • columns • trim • pallets • scaffolding • stages • displays • girders • joists • trusses • studs • cabinets • shelving • platforms • architectural mill- work • panelings. Overall Product in Place Increased Fire Safety Osmose Flameproof controls the spread of fire, reduces or eliminates smoke and toxic fumes, contributes little or no fuel to a fire, maintains its strength longer than most other building materials under fire conditions and upon removal of the flame source extinguishes itself. It pro- vides the extra margin for life safety and prevention of extensive fire and water damage. Three -way Protection In addition to its approved fire retardant qualities, Osmose Flameproof resists damage caused by termites and other insects as well as decay and rot. Lower Fire Insurance Rates Because of its UL approval, Osmose Flameproof qualifies for important fire insurance rate reductions by a large number of fire insurance rating bureaus throughout the United States and Canada. As lower rate recognition varies from state to state, it is suggested that you contact the local office of your state insurance rating organization for specific rate reduction information. Other Characteristics Osmose Flameproof is clean to handle, paintable and has excellent insulating value. While heavier than untreated wood, it is light in weight compared to many other building materials having the same strength properties. In -place costs are usually lower than other non -com- bustible materials. It costs about 50% more than untreated wood making it competitive with such materials as steel studs and bar joists. D Assembly, Installation Flameproof treated products are intended for interior application only. Most fire retardant chemicals including Flame- proof are hygroscopic and thus absorb and retain moisture. At the job site they should be stored indoors or completely covered and elevated from the ground when stored outdoors. Flameproof should not be applied in combination with large areas of wet plaster, wet terrazzo or where concrete is being poured. Wait until these areas are dry and the moisture has dissipated. Do not use in places of continuous high humidity such as wet process industries. In humid or damp conditions, Flame- proof may react with galvanized coat- ings. Contact Osmose for precautionary treatment of metal fasteners. Resurfacing or ripping (other than or- dinary end cutting) negates the Under- writers' label. Therefore, all lumber to be treated should be pre -cut as much as possible. Contact Osmose for a list of the species which may be milled or reworked after treatment. Treated lumber tends to dull equipment, therefore, carbide tipped tools are recommended if cutting, machining or framing is necessary after treatment. In accordance with National Design Standards, Flameproof treated lumber should be considered for design pur- poses to be 90% as strong as untreated lumber. Laminated beams, plywood and other laminated components must be made with waterproof glue, and be of a size and shape to fit into the pressure treat- ing cylinders. m Coatings, Surfacings If Flameproof treated material is to be painted, varnished or sealer applied, it should be kiln -dried to an average mois- ture content of 19% or less. Before apply- ing paints, sealers, or stains, the surface must be dry and clean. For architectural finish, the surface should be lightly sanded before application of the first or prime coat. Natural finish staining may not cover discoloration caused by sepa- rators used during drying, therefore spe- cial handling should be requested. The treating plant should be advised of the end use prior to treatment. Where Flameproof material is occasion- ally exposed to dampness (weather) or condensation, it should be protected by application of a three -coat paint system. Exterior paints applied in accordance with manufacturers' recommendations are to be used. (Do not use latex paints, or other waterbase finishes). m Technical Support Specifications All wood designated to be fire - retardant treated shall be pressure impregnated with Osmose Flameproof to comply with the requirement for a flamespread of 25 or less with no evidence of significant progressive combustion when tested for 30 minutes duration under the standard test method for fire hazard classification of building materials (ASTM E -84). Each piece of wood shall bear the UL FR -S Label, indicating compliance with the fire hazard classification. After treat- ment, all plywood and lumber, 2" nomi- nal or less, shall be dried to an average moisture content of 19% or less (the designer may wish to specify a lower moisture content for lumber to be used for cabinets, trim or other special uses). All other lumber shall be dried to remove the moisture injected during treatment. m Code Acceptibility Osmose Flameproof is approved by Underwriters' Laboratories, Inc. and has also qualified for the Factory Mutual Engineering Corporation quality perform- ance brand. The chemicals react at temperatures slightly below the igniting point of untreated wood. Non - flammable vapors are re- leased at a slow persistent rate. The . non - combustible vapors surround the wood fibers, while the non - burning tars and water vapors form a protective in- sulating char on the surface of the wood preventing it from igniting and thus elim- inating the spread of fire and reducing the amount of smoke and toxic fumes caused by a fire. Flameproof treated wood is permanently protected and should not be confused with fire- retard- ant coatings applied to the surface of the wood. FIRE RETARDANT WOOD K -33 PRESSURE PRESERVED WOOD Product Presentation Osmose K -33 Pressure Preserved Wood includes lumber and plywood that has been impregnated by the vacuum pres- sure method with Cromated Copper Arsenate Type B preservative. This pre- servative chemical penetrates deep into the cellular structure of the wood where it locks permanently with the wood fibers, thus eliminating the possibility of destruction by decay, rot, termites and other insects. Permanent, Needs No Finishing Osmose K -33 is a permanent treatment. It will not leach when used in contact with the ground or running water, mak- ing it ideal for all types of exposures. Because Osmose K -33 treated wood products have a permanent light gray - green hue, they need not be painted or stained, thus allowing the architect to combine the warmth and beauty of natural grained wood with low in -place cost, and offer a maintenance free product. Twenty -Year Warranty Osmose K -33 treated wood products carry a 20 -year money back warranty against decay and insect attack (except for certain salt water marine applica- tions) with proof of purchase and right - to- examine conditions. Underwriters' Laboratories Tested Flameproof has earned a UL classifica- tion of 25 or less flame spread, smoke development and fuel contribution for all commonly used species of lumber and plywood. These ratings were gained when treated lumber and plywood were tested by the standard test method ASTM E -84 for the extended duration of 30 minutes. A UL label can be affixed to each piece of Flameproof treated lumber and plywood. Osmose treating plants are continuously factory inspected by Under- writers' Laboratories, Inc., thus assuring uniform high quality of treated products.
