For freestanding decks higher than 5 feet above the ground. b. For decks (regardless of height) projecting farther than 20 feet from the building, or more than twice the attached sides length. c. For decks subject to heavy loads or high winds. KNEE BRACING - POST TO SINGLE JOISTS BLOCKING, SAME SIZE AS JOIST, INSTALLED IN SECOND SPACE FROM DOUBLE JOIST. CONNECT TO JOISTS WITH TECO A -28 JOIST HANGERS. When installing X- bracing, use no smaller than 2 "x4" members, one on each side of posts. Be sure to bolt members together at "X" in center. (In 2 -post arrangement, use 4 "x4" filter block between 2 "x4" members at "X" in center.) NAILING THE DECK a. When installing deck boards, use hot - dipped galvanized 10d nails. Your job will look neater and more professional if you keep the nails in a straight line. Be patient when putting down deck boards. This is the most visible part. Take your time and check your progress. b. Lay, square, and fasten the two outside pieces of decking at opposite edges of the deck. If the appearance of the lumber permits, put boards bark side up to minimize cupping. ANNUAL RINGS c. Lay out the rest of the decking on the joists. Start spacing and fastening the deck boards in place from either edge. In most cases, spacing between the deck boards is 1/4". d. Nail down each deck board with at least two nails at each support point for 4" boards, three nails for 8" boards, and four nails for 8" boards. e. To prevent splitting at the ends of the boards, drill small pilot -holes through the deck boards. f. When the last deck board has been nailed down, snap a chalk -line against the ends and saw the deck boards off flush with the "End - Joists". d. Knee bracing of deck posts will permit more unobstructed use of area under deck. How- ever, it is recommended that posts higher than 8' above the ground utilize X- bracing. Such products also meet the Minimum Property Standards of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). ' TECO is a registered trademark of the TECO Products and Testing Corporation, Washington, D.C. CONSTRUCTING STAIRS a. When constructing stairs, measure the vertical height to be accommodated and decide upon the best "Riser" height for each step. This will de- termine the number of steps needed. b. Multiply the number of steps by the "Tread" length to find the overall "Run" of the stairs. (Table provides suggested ratios of "Tread" (T) length to "Riser" (R) height). c. 4 -2x4's spaced 1 /4" apart provide a tread 15" wide and 3 -2x6's provide an 18" tread. RJ d. If open stairway stringers are to be used they should be cut from 2x12's after they have been worked out on paper. It is also possible to pur- chase pre -cut stair - stringers at certain lumber yards. This eliminates some of the more difficult angle cutting of stringers if the open stringer method is used. RE: LUMBER USAGE These plans are predicated on the use of Douglas Fir - Larch or Southern Pine, Grades No. 1 or No. 2, pressure preservatively treated. It is recommended that you check lumber for approved grade markings and treatment specifications. Contents of this publication are suggestions only and do not indicate compliance with any specific structural, code, service, or safety requirements. RAILINGS a. The safety and beauty of a deck is enhanced by its railings. Design possibilities for these are endless. b. Regardless of the design, railings have the same basic structure. This consists of vertical posts capped and joined by a cross member laid flat. c. Spacing between the posts depends on the size of the cap. Posts should be spaced up to 4 feet apart under a 2x4 cap and up to 6 feet apart under a 2x6 cap. Where possible, bolt posts to headers or joists with Yz" machine bolts with washers, d. Railings should be at least 30 inches above the deck surface. e. The strongest and simplest railings are those having their horizontal members secured to the outside faces of the posts. However, placing hori- zontals between the posts (flush with the post's sides, or on top of the posts) narrows the struc- ture, making it look less bulky. (Table provides suggested ratios of "Tread" (T) length to "Riser" (R) height). c. 4 -2x4's spaced 1/4 " apart provide a tread 15" wide and 3 -2x6's provide an 18" tread. 1 RISE LANDING A 4 AD -6 JOIST HANGERS 6 A -28 JOIST HANGERS I 1 /2 LBS 16D GALV. NAILS d. If open stairway stringers are to be used they should be cut from 2x12's after they have been worked out on paper. It is also possible to pur- chase pre -cut stair- stringers at certain lumber yards. This eliminates some of the more difficult angle cutting of stringers if the open stringer method is used. Where possible, bolt posts to headers or joists with Y2" machine bolts with washers. d.
