STUDIES, ESIGN, INSPECTION, AND TESTING SERVICES. 5450 GRIFFIN ROAD, DAVIE, FL 33314 PHONE 584 -6115 In accordance with your authorization, technicians from Soilprobe Engineering & Testing, Inc., performed one shallow standard penetration test and split sampling of soil at the referenced site. The scope of this investigation was to obtain data regarding the existing soil condition and to provide preliminary recommendation for foundation design and construction. The soil at the site was investigated with one standard penetration test boring advanced to a depth of 14 below existing grade. The test was located close to the existing residence as indicated by the client. Due to restricted access for truck mounted testing equipment the test was conducted using a portable drill -rig. The test was performed in substantial accordance with the recom- mended procedures as per ASTM Method D -1586. Detailed subsurface conditions encountered at the location and depth explored are presented in the attached log of borings. A review of boring log revealed the presence of a 12 inches thick layer of top soil consisting of dark sandy muck with roots. Below surfacing layer, to a depth of approximately 7 feet the test encountered tan gravely sand. From 7 to about 10 feet of the explored depth the soil consisted grey or dark silty loam with little muck. Below the silty loam, to the boring termination depth, the soil consisted of light tan sand with sandstone. The water table measured at the time of test was found at 4.00 feet below prevailing grade. The standard penetration test revealed the presence of a layer of silty loam with muck between approximately 7 to 10 feet of the explored depth. This silty soil is compressible and unstable therefore rendering the site unsuitable for the anticipated construction supported by conventional shallow foundation. Based on our observations, results of boring test and evaluation of the existing soil conditions, we recommend that the proposed structures be supported by piling. Either auger cast piles of steel pin piles could be utilized at this site. Pan American Foundation Co. 1430 NE 101st Street Miami Shores, FL October 2, 1995 Page 2 of 2 The auger cast piles shall penetrate through the sandy fill and silty loam layers and bear in the sandstone and limestone formation encountered at 10 feet below grade. We further estimate that the minimum depths of installation for 14 -in, diameter auger cast piles required to achieve design bearing capacities could reach the following depths: 20 feet for 17 tons 22 feet for 20 tons 25 feet for 25 tons The concrete shall consist of portland cement grout mixture with a minimum compressive strength of 4,000 PSI at 28 days. Each pile shall be reinforced with a minimum 4#5 for the full length of pile with #3 ties spaced at 12 inches, The steel pin piles shall consist of minimum 3 -in. diameter, hot dipped galvanized piles as per ASTM A- 153. The piles shall be capped at the bottom end and shall be driven in a straight line to the sandstone and limestone formation, The depth of installation, pile bearing capacity and spacing of installation shall be determined based on the contractors installation equipment, strength of pipe and estimated loads. However, the minimum pile tip elevation shall not be less than 16 feet below grade. All piles shall be filled with concrete after the installation. This report is based on limited field data and it is preliminary in nature. Additional deep soil tests shall be performed and evaluated for the final design and construction.
