6,006 lbs. The axial stress on the column is P /A. For a 4 "x 4 "x 1/4" tube, A = 3.59 id.

For properties of 4 "x12" beam, the surfaced size for design is 3.5"x11.25" with area ,
A = 39.38 in , section modulus = S = 73.83 in and moment of inertia = I= 415.28 in .
Assume No.1 dense Southern Pine, F,= 1400 psi, F = 85 psi, and E= 1,600,000 psi, then
from SFBC 2308.3b , a 10% reduction for live load is permissible, so the total dead load
and live load is (0.9 *30) +20 = 47 psf. The reaction on the supporting beam is R =
(47 *15.5 = 451.67 plf. Using a length between columns at 12.33' -0.5' for the
shoes gives a 11.83' span , with shear V =w1/2= 451.67 *11.83/2 = 2,671.63 lbs and moment
M= w1 /8= 451.67* 11.83 2 /8= 7,901.34 ft -lbs. Check bending stress Fb = M/S =
7901.34* 12/73.83 = 1284.25 psi < 1400 psi .. OK. Check shear stress Sv = V/A =

Soil pressure from the DL and LL with a 2'x 2' footing is 6006/4 = 1500 psf. Allow some
overturning from wind acting sideways on the structure. Use q = 0.00256I(IV) from
ASCE 7 -93. For K , the exposure coefficient, consider that the house is located in a
suburban wooded area - but adjacent to Biscayne Bay. Exposure C will provide coefficients
adequate for this design. Then K = 0.80. I = 1.05 for a residence on the hurricane
shoreline. V for South Florida is 110 mph. Velocity pressure is 0.00256 *0.80 *(1.05 *110) =
.27.32 psf. Gh, the gust factor, is 1.32 and Cp, the pressure coefficient is 0.8 on the
windward side. Then the wind pressure on the side of the exposed rafter is p = q *Gh *Cp =
27.32 *0.80 *1.32 = 28.85 psf - use 30 psf.
At the rafter exposure - use depth 8" and 0.67 *60 = 20 plf. The sideways reaction at the
post line is R = (20 *15.5 = 192 lbs. For one post, P = 192/2 = 96 lbs. The
reaction is at the top of the post about 8.5' above the ground level. Applied moment
is 96 *8.5 = 816 ft -lbs. For the 2' footing, T = C = 816/1.33 = 614 lbs. Soil pressure at the
edge of the footing from moment is P/2 = 307 psf. Total soil pressure is p = 1500 + 307 =
1,807 psf. Allow a bearing pressure of 2,000 psf for unclassified material.

Determine the uplift from the wind: q = 27.32 psf and Gz = 1.32. F = q *Gz *Cf. Take
Cf from Table 11, ASCE 7 -93, for monoslope roofs over unenclosed structures.
L/B = 15.5/25 = 0.62 - use Cf = 0.53. Then F = 27.32 *1.32 *0.53 = 19.1 psf. Uplift
transferred to the roof beam is 97.45 *19.1/10.14 = 184 plf. On one column -
U = 12.5 *184 = 2300 lbs. The concrete footing must be increased and placed lower
in the ground.

Check anchor bolts: Use 5/8" bolts - for A307B bolts, from the AISC ASD Manual, allow
6.1 kips. For two bolts 2 *6.1 = 12.2 kips > 3.45... OK. Use 3/4" bolts for corrosion
protection. Determine thickness of the connection angle. Pull is 3.45/2 = 1.725 kips an each
angle. Take an estimated moment arm of 2" from the bolt to the vertical leg with a point of
inflection at midpoint. Then M = 1 * 1725 = 1,750 in -lbs. For a 3/8" angle, S = 4 *0.375 =
0.094 in a = M/S = 1750/0.094 = 18,670 psi - less than 0.66 *Fy = 24,000 psi used as
allowable for bending stresses.
Check rebar in the concrete footing. 0.02 *Ag = 0.002 *18 *27 = 0.972. Four #5's produces
4 *0.31 = 1.24 in > 0.972 ... OK.
