Director DATE: December 27, 1994 SUBJECT: Window and Door Bucks Our office has seen installations of windows and doors in the envelope of the building that do not conform to the installation requirements that they were tested with. The use of the furring strip (314" thick) is not an approved method of attachment. A 2" x pressure treated shall be used after applying approved caulking underneath the wood buck. The number of fasteners are stated in the Product Approval and shall be enforced, as well as the required labeling. We are aware that some members of the industry are still installing windows with the furring strip and it is impossible after the window opening has been built to fit a 2 x in place of the furring. • In situations like this, the inspector shall make sure that Tapcon type screws are used and are long enough to penetrate into the concrete or filled block. This should only be accepted as a remedial action during the transition period and for existing homes. Another potential problem is the exaggerated use shims when the improper opening was left by the framing contractor. We need proper enforcement of this requirements to assure that these components are properly installed which are vital for the integrity of the envelope of the building. Please - distribute this memo to all your inspection personnel. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. On Table 6C-1 indicate the R -value of the insulation being added to each component and the efficiency levels d the equipment being installed. All R- values and efficiencies installed must meet or exceed the minimum values liaed. Components and equipment neither being added nor renovated may be left blanks. 2. ADDrnONS ONLY. Determine the percentage of new glass to condilioned floor area in the addition as follows. Total the areas of all glass windows, sliding glass doors and glass door panels. Double the area of as non- vertical roof glass and add ft to the previous total. When glass In existing exterior walls is being removed or enclosed by the addition, an eraunt equal to the total area of this Jess may In subtracted from the total glass area. Divide the a4usted glass area total by the conditioned floor area of the addition. Multiply by 100 to get the percent Find the largest glass percentage under which your cala, lated percentage lags on Table. 602. Prescriptives are given by the typed glass (fie or Double pane) and the overhang (OH) paired with a shading coefficient (SC). For a given glass type and overhang, the minimum shading coefficient allowed ls specified. Actual glass windows and doors previously In the exterior walls of the house and being reinstalled in the addition, do not have to comply with the overhang and shading coefficient requirements on Tads t1C•2, AU new pass in the addition must meet the requirement for one of the options In the glass percentage category you indicated, The overhang (OH) distance is measured perpendicularly from the fete of the glass to a point directly under lie outermost edge d the overhang. 3. RENOVATIONS ONLY. Replacement glass needs to meet the following requirements. Any glass type and shading coefficient may be used tor glass areas which are under at least a Iwo foot overhang and whose lowest edge does not extend further than 8 feet from the overhang. Glass areas being renovated that do not meet this criteria must be either single -pane tinted, double -pans cloaca double -pane ti nod. 4. Compete the Intonation requested on the top hat of page 1.
