Baluster Spacing
The secret to professional - looking
railings is precise layout and
installation. Make sure you install the
first b } luster vertically. Then use a
spacer block to install all the rest.
This way, you don't have to check
every baluster for location and plumb.

all the posts on each side of your
deck the same distance apart. Usually
it can't be done. Instead, divide each
run of posts evenly along the edge of the deck, and try to keep the
baluster spacing about 5 - 6 inches within each section.
You can print a Side View of your deck from the Drawing Board in
the Design Workshop. Then use the printed scale to determine exact
dimensions. Or you can calculate baluster spacing for yourself in the
following manner:
To learn how many balusters you'll need between any two posts,
first add those six inches to the width of a baluster (usually 1 1 /2 inches).
Divide that sum (7 1 /2 inches) into the distance between the posts. The
resulting quotient will tell you how many balusters you'll need. Once you
know .this, you can calculate the precise spacing between these
balusters.
To calculate baluster spacing between posts: Subtract the total
width of the balusters from the distance between the posts. (You'll find
that it's easier and more accurate to measure the width of all the
balusters at once.) Divide this result by the number of spaces.
(Remember: there's always one more space than there are balusters.) If
the resulting space is more than six inches, try again with one more
baluster and one more space.
For example: Say two posts are 68 inches apart. 68 = 7 1 /2 = 9.06, or
ninebalusters. Together, nine balusters measure 13 1 /2 inches wide. 68 -
13 1 /2 = 54 /2. Thus, you'll need a total of 54% inches of open space
between balusters, distributed among 10 spaces. (Nine balusters will
break the distance between posts into 10 spaces.) 54 1 /2 divided by 10 =
5.45 inches. Thus, each space will be 5.45 inches wide you'll need
to cut a spacer to 57/16_ inches.

• Attaching Stringers - Cut Stringer to the Deck
To hold a cut stringer securely to-the joist
framing, it should extend under the rim joist
and be face - nailed to the joists or blocking.

-your- stringers. You can also use joisthangers
noted into the_stringer to carry the load. But
that arrangement is weaker.
Hanging Joists
Nailing joist hangers can be
pretty clumsy if you don't plait the
nailing order. Each hanger has four
flanges, and each needs solid
backing. Start by nailing a hanger -
one flange only - at each location.
(With the hangers left open, it's
easier to slip in the joists.) Align
the top of the hanger seat carefully
with the bottom of the ledger. On
the other side of the joist, drive the
first nail in at an angle to pull the
hanger tight. A loose fit won't
•
provide proper bearing. Pull the
joist to vertical against the first flange. Nail the hanger
the last side of the hanger to the joist.

cross a beam, helps to keep the joists
from rotating. Bridging is the term used
to describe blocks nailed between joists
in the middle of long spans. Bridging

2x12 joists, bridging is needed whenever
the span is greater than 10 feet. But
check with your local building
department to see whether bridging is
required for your design.

Fastening Joists to a Beam
Each joist should be toenailed, right,

with two 10 -penny nails (one on
either side) wherever it crosses a
beam. To make your deck stronger
and more durable, use hurricane ties,
left, to connect joists to beams.
Toenails tend to act as a pathway for
moisture into the beam. Moreover,
toenails provide - Limited- strength
against uplift forces generated by
high winds and earthquakes.
Hurricane ties utilize more nails, oriented at more effective angles, at
each connection.
About Joist Hangers
Joist hangers, made from
galvanized sheet metal, provide full
support for joists and speed their
installation. Always attach them with
the proper nails, called joist - hanger
nails. These short, thick nails are
designed to handle the load, and they
won't penetrate through 1'/2 -inch
stock. Be sure to use the right size
hanger to prevent the joists from
twisting.

Framing Anchors
Where one joist must bear the
Wight Of another, it's wise to
reinforce the connection with framing
hardware. At corners, where joist
hangars won't fit, these framing
anchors, often referred to as "framing
clips," will help carry the load. These
can also be used to support stairs
where they join the deck frame.

Decking screws hold far better than nails.
Buglehead screws are manufactured with sharp
threads and a horn - shaped head so they can be
power driven, usually without pre - drilling. Use a
screw gun or a variable speed drill to drive them.
Deck screws are sold with Philips (left) or square
drive (right) heads; driver bits cost under a dollar
for either style. The screw thread should
penetrate at least as deep in the holding member
as the piece to be held is thick. Thus, a VA inch
deckboard requires a three inch screw.
