PROCEDURE: A 10 x 3 section selected from stock by our representative on September 30, 1952. A semi - translucent, green, corrugated, glass fibre laminated plasic sheet. DATE OF TEST: November 3, 1952. REPORTED TO: Spun Lite Corp., Miami, Florida An 18" x 7 - 1/2" section of the plastic was cut from the sample and supported on knife -edges 13" apart, as shown in the accompanying sketch. A uniformly increasing load was applied by means of a standard testing machine until the specimen fractured. Incremental readings were taken on the Proving Ring Dial and an Ames Dial giving the Load applied and settlement, respectively. The Modulus of Rupture of the material, based on this test, is 13,200 p.s.i. Load and settlement readings are as follows: Load, lbs. Settlement, ins. Load, lbs. Settlement, ins. 20 .230 90 1,435 26 .340 100 1.560 35 .460 103 1.600 43 .56o 107 1.650 49 .660- 112 1.730 50 .675 115 1.965 60 .770 123 2.440 68 .920 Failure 70 1.090 Material failed under center of the 2" 84 1.255 loading block. Failure was a straight line about 3" long, perpendicular to the corrugation. Failure at 123 lbs. produces a maximum moment at center oil 350 pound - inches. Assuming the cross section of this plastic to be described by two parallel line curves, a section Modulus for 1 cycle was found to be 0.00442 in 3. Respectfully submitted, J. C. Engineer's Laboratory and Inspection Service 0 -17 377 660 N. W. 71st STREET -7 -52 1st MIAMI 38, FLORIDA REPORT OF: LOAD TEST ON CORRUGATED PLASTIC ORDER NO 1 56.1 SAMPLE: A 10t x 31 section selected from stock by our representative on September 30, 1952. A semi - translucent, green, corrugated, glass fibre laminated plastic sheet. tiATE OF TEST: October 25, 1952. A section of the plastic material was cut and firmly nailed with roofing nails to the wooden frame as shown in the accompanying sketch. Nails were spaced at every 5th node, which is 6" apart. The frame was arranged so that an area of 2t x 6t would be enclosed within the nails. The clear span was 22 -3/8" x 58 -3/8" (2 x 61 less thickness of 2" lumber). The loading was carried out in 60 -pound increments of uniformly dry sand. Heavy, waxed paper was spread on top of the plastic sheet to eliminate the possibility of any moisture in the sand affecting the plastic. An initial load of 120 pounds of sand was used, followed by 60 pounds increments, corresponding to a 5 p.s.f. load. An Ames Dial was attached to the center of the span to measure settlement. Dial readings were taken after every incremental load and at 2 and h minutes, then the sheet was completely unloaded and rebound readings taken at the same time intervals. As will be seen from the tabulated results, when a 60 p.s.f. load had been reached, it was main- tained for 25 -1/2 hours. When the plastic was finally unloaded, rebound readings were taken for 23 hours. Rebound had virtually ceased in that time. When the apparatus was dismantled the plastic sheet was examined. No damage was found except for some superficial scratching, probably aggravated by the loading and u of the sand, and slight sub - surface crazing of the material around the nail holes. upon it. J. Samples of the plastic were driven into #2 structural pine with a nail as just described. Downward load was applied to the plastic as close to the nail as possible until the nail was withdrawn. In all cases failure occurred. by the head mf the nail pulling through the plastic. In no case was the head pulled off the nail. The neoprene gasket was not damaged in any of the three (3) tests. 11 2nd Series of Tests (Aluminum Rivet) PROCEDURE: J. C. Jureit ENGINEER OF TESTS Test No. 1 145 lbs. As above the plastic was fastened to aluminum tubing by means of the rivets and load was applied to the plastic as close to the rivet as possible. Failures occurred by pulling the rivet through the plastic without disturbing or deforming the rivet head. Test No. 5 182 lbs. Tlei STREET p 0. ;11048 MIAMI 38, FLORIDA 1St REPORT OF: INTACT TEST OF CORRUGATED PLASTIC SHUT ORDER NO 655.1 A rectangular frame was made of 2" x 4" pine, such that the length was 6.0' and width 2.0', center to center. This frame was rigidly and uniformly supported 8" above the ground throughout the perimeter. The plastic sheet was secured to the frame with nails supplied by the client. This galvanized nail is 1 -3/4" long by 1/8" diameter with a 3/8" diameter head and a neoprene. washer under the head. Nails were at 5" centers, driven through the top nodes (Note: nails not driven in the valleys, since this is a code requirement and rain would be more apt to pass through). The .corrugations spanned the 2' spacing. The 6' length was one continuous sheet of plastic and nailed at 5" centers along the sides as well. For impact, a 50 pound bag of sand was allowed to drop freely on the center of the 2'x6' panel. The bag was first dropped from a height of 6 ", then 1', then 1 -1/2', 2', 2 -1/2', etc. Nails pulled gradually as the drop increased. At a drop of 5', the plastic failed completely by tearing plastic around nails and by two cuts in the center of the plastic, at each side of the bag. These were straight, about 6" long and were perpendicular to the corrugations. The aluminum sheet was cut to fit the same 2' x 6' frame. Due to the shape of standard metal corrugated sheets, two overlaps occur in the 6' length (see sketch). One node of overlap was provided. Same neoprene washered galvanized nails used as on plastic test. The aluminum was tested using the 50 lb. sand bag, as with the plastic - and the same procedure was used. At the 2' drop, the aluminum was torn loose from the nails by radial tearing of the aluminum. In general, the nail heads were not sheared off. There was no break in the material when struck by the bag. The galvanized steel was fastened to the 2' x 6' frame in the same manner as the aluminum, by cutting a 7' sheet into 3 pieces and mounting with a 1 node side lap ( see sketch) Same nails were used, one at alternate corrugations and same spacing was used in dropping the 50 lb. sand bag. At 3.0', the steel failed, primarily.by shearing off the nail heads. There was no break in the material when struck by the bag.' It is our opinion that the plastic performed much better than the steel and aluminum in the test. Respectfully submitted, WING;RTER LABORATORIES, INC. Measurements were taken at room temperature, then the complete apparatus was placed in an oven where it remained for 1 -1/2 hours and obtained a temperature of 127°F. The micrometer employed the use of an indicating dial which measured in thousandths of inches. At the end of the hour and a half, there was no perceptible change in dial readings. Since the entire micrometer was made of steel, it may therefore be deduced that the co- efficient of thermal expansion of the plastic is very close to that of steel, which would be 6.36 x 10 per unit length per degree.
