System Number 1 (BUR)
Deck Steel/Wood
Deck description 18 - 22 ga. steel deck, wood plank or min. 5/8" plywood.
New construction and reroofing.
For steel decks less than 22 ga. but not less than 26 ga. TPR fastener
and Olympic 3" round or SFS type 'S' stress plate may be utilized at a
density of 1:2 ft. Field fastener testing is required on all re -roof
projects to confirm a minimum withdrawal resistance of 400 lbs..
Systems installed over steel deck less than 22 ga. require written
approval from GAF Technical Department.
Vapor Retarder (Optional) (Optional)
(Steel decks only)
Any Factory Mutual approved vapor retarder with proprietary or
approved adhesive or such other vapor retarder system designed by the
architect or design engineer. The vapor retarder forms part of the roof
assembly for fire classification. See Factory Mutual Approval Guide
for listings. First ply shall not be bonded to wood decks. A red rosin
sheet may be applied below the base sheet over wood and plywood
decks.
Insulation (Optional for wood decks only)
Wood fiber, fiberglass; perlite; polyisocyanurate; perlite/isocyanurate
composite; basalt rockwool, or gypsum board: Insulation shall be
either bonded to a nailed base sheet (see base sheet nailing pattern) in
a full mopping of ASTM D -312 type 111 or type IV hot asphalt or
mechanically attached with a Factory Mutual approved fastening
assembly listed with the insulation panel. (See Approved Insulations
and Fastening Patterns List).

with Section 3401.9(c) of the South Florida Building Code. Prior to
application, all existing roof surfaces used as a bonding substrate shall
be tested for uplift resistance in compliance with ASTM E -907 to the
calculated design velocity pressure of the roof deck. Existing roof
surfaces and dissimilar materials must be fully primed with ASTM
D-41 primer and allowed to dry. If insulation board is bonded to the
existing roof or to a base sheet no one dimension should be greater
than 4 ft. If more than one insulation layer is applied, the top layer
may be mechanically attached or bonded in a full mopping of ASTM
D -312 type III or type IV asphalt.
Note: No insulation panels shall be bonded to an existing built up roof
with a gravel surface without full removal of the loose gravel, priming
of the surface with ASTM D-41 primer, and a flood coat of asphalt,
prior to mopping of the insulation with bonding asphalt. Refer to
GAF published application considerations for insulation application
and to attachment requirements published in the current Factory
Mutual Approval Guide.

membranes vertically on slopes of 1 inch per foot or more and
baclgiail them into wood Hailers or nailable decks approximately 4
inches from the back edge of the sheet All end laps must be at wood
nailers, and the top edge must nailed into the wood nailer on 6"
centers. Use approved roofing nails and tin caps.
The Ruberoid membranes shall be terminated at nailers as dictated
above. For non - insulated wood decks, terminate and nail the end of
Ruberoid membrane on the same nailer spacings indicated above. The
membrane must then be nailed off on 6" centers, 2" from the top of the
membrane, into the nailer or wood deck .using nails with integral
metal heads at least 1" round or square. The overlapping membrane
must extend at least 6" past the center line of these nails.
See Approved Insulation and Fastening Pattern list attached.
Refer to GAF requirements for application of steep roofs.
1. Maximum slope shall be 6 ":12" unless specifically approved by
GAF Technical Department (Any application over 1 ":12 ", shall
require backnailing of all pies 4" in from the back edge of the felt into
wood nailers.) On slopes greater than 1 ":12" all plies shall be
installed parallel to the slope. Nailing shall be through tin caps 6"
o.c.. All overlapping shall overlap the tin caps a minimum of 6 ".
Refer to GAF requirements for installation of steep roofs. Note slope
limitations on gravel surface specifications to a maximum of 3 ":I2 ".
2, An overlay insulation panel is required on all applications over
closed cell insulations (See Insulation List).
3. All perimeter nailer and metal profile design shall conform with
Factory Mutual Loss Prevention Data Sheet 1-49.
4. All asphalt shall comply with ASTM D -312 requirements.
5. Bonding and dissimilar surfaces (other than insulation facers and
asphalt saturated membranes) should be fully primed with ASTM
D-41 primer for asphalt applications and allowed to fully dry.
6. This roof system assembly, when applied over a wood plank deck
with an ASTM D -2626 or D-4601 base sheet mechanically attached at
9" in the lap and two rows at 18" in the field with min. 12 ga. annular
ring shank nails and tin caps has been approved for use to a maximum
