I had originally planned to put a skylight in the room, but the cost was prohibitively expensive. The roof adjacent to the skylight on the new roof was to be about a 4/12 pitch which I subsequently felt would be poorly proportioned to the existing adjacent roofs which are 9/12 to 12/12 pitches. Hence, the roof structure was redesigned as a 9/12 pitch, which would necessitate the ridge of the new roof extending about 4 feet vertically onto the existing living room roof. I believe this will create a pleasing continuity with the structure of the house. It will also be necessary to use the same simulated gray slate (500 lbs /square) which was used on the rest of the house. The new room has a square footage about 10% of the original house, and the identical s12t' product is available, now with a fiberglass matrix rather than an asbestos matrix. Sincerely, Guy E. Third course is applied in the same manner as first course. VERTICAL LINES: Although only two lines are absolutely necessary, four or more lines are recommended to ensure a straight and square roof. Snap first line 33/4" from the gable and second line 81/2" from the gable, allowing for 1 " overhang. Mark third line 131/4" from the gable and the fourth line 18" from the gable. BUTTS STAGGERED Lay starters as described under "Butts Aligned, "_,Start first course with a full shingle. Continue that course as under "Butts Aligned." Start second course with a half shingle. Snap chalk lines to serve as guides for limits of exposure. Apply third course starting with a full shingle. Note — use of upper and lower nail holes when applying shingles with butts staggered. A 2" min. headlap must always be maintained. HORIZONTAL LINES HORIZONTAL LINES — Snap at least four horizontal lines. First line is 8" from the eave (allowing for 11/2" overhang); second line is 141/2" from the eaves third line is 7" above second line. The fourth line is 7" above the third line, etc. It is best to repeat this until about 6 feet from the ridge. NOTE: Whenever obstructions are encountered (e.g., dormers, chim- neys, vent pipes, etc.), snap extra lines around the obstruction to ensure a true and square roof. GABLE END TO FINISH THE ROOF TO HIP OR CAP THE ROOF HIP AND RIDGE 1. Cut and install the hip and ridge starter (half a hip and ridge shingle). 2. Install one full hip and ridge shingle. 3. Install one more hip and ridge shingle. 4. Then do the same on the back side of the hip. In order to interlock the hip and ridge, it is very important to install two full shingles on the front side, then two full shingles on the back side and then two full shingles on the front side, etc. It must be done this way in order to achieve alternate laps of top edge. When work has progressed to approximately six feet from the ridge, draw a line diagonally from the top of the last course to a snapped horizontal line 2" from the ridge. The diagonal line must be some fixed length divisible by 7 ". Mark the diagonal line at 7" intervals and snap horizontal lines exactly at each mark. When appying, turn starters upside down so that colored side is exposed to view from the ground level. When ordering, 3.4 bundles of shingles are needed for every 100 Ift. of starters required. UNDERLAYMENT Use 30# asphalt saturated asbestos felt with double coverage on the eaves. NAILS Fasten each shingle with two nails. Over wood board decks, secure shingles with standard galvanized needle point roofing nails with 3 /8 " flat head, 11/2" long for new work, 2" long for re- roofing. For applica- tion over plywood decks, it is recom- mended to use screw thread or ring barb galvanized needle point nails. Nails should penetrate sheathing. NAIL HOLES The shingles may be applied with butts aligned or staggered. Staggered applica- tion may require up to 15% more material. Use lower nail holes for straight applica- tion. When butts are staggered, use upper nail holes, if lower nail holes are blocked by underlying shingles. For rapid and efficient cutting, punching and notching, we recommend using an asbestos shingle cutter. Do not use saws or other abrasive tools. For circular and angular cuts, punch a series of holes approxi- mately 1/4" apart along line of cut using a nail set. Tap with a hammer to knock out.
