Introduction
The charts included with this cover page help calculate the design
wind loads as determined using the American Society of Civil
Engineers Code ASCE7 -88 for use with garage doors. The charts are
divided between single car garage doors (up to 9'W x 8'H) and
double car garage doors (up to 16'2 "W x 8'H).
Instructions
1. Determine the garage door size as a single car door (up to 9'W
x 8'H) or double car door (up to 16'2 "W x 8'H).
2. Measure the "Mean Roof Height" of the building. The mean roof
height is measured as the average height of the roof, not the
peak of the roof. The eave height may be used for a roof
slope of less than 10 °.
3. With the door size and mean roof height known, the appropriate
calculation chart can be used.
4. Determine the "Minimum Building Dimension ". For example, a
building (or house) with a 80' x 30' floor plan, has a minimum
building dimension of 30'.
5. Measure the distance from the corner of the building to the
nearest edge of the door opening. The nearer the door opening
to a corner, the higher the negative design wind load. The
corner wind zone of a building is defined as 10% of the
minimum building dimension or 40% of the mean roof height,
whichever is smaller, but not less than 3 feet or 4% of the
minimum building dimension.
6. The wind load can now be determined. For example a single car
garage door is to be installed in a house with a mean roof
height of 15' or less and a 80' x 30' floor plan. The door
opening is located 2' from a corner. The design wind loads
are (using the charts): +39.9 PSF and -43.5 PSF.
