EXCAVATION - CONCRETE- MASONRY
Removal The excavations shall be cut to sufficient size and depth
of Earth to allow for foundations, form work and the installation
of all other work to the best advantage. Excavation for
soil, water, underground conduit, etc., shall be done by
the respective trades.
Grading of any surplus soil shall be done as indicated
on the drawings as grading up to the walls of the build-
ing. Contractor is to furnish any additional soil re-
quired for terraces or slabs on fill after soil from
excavations have been used up for that purpose.
Forms
Cement
Concrete
1•
Wood forms for the concrete work shall be built strongly
and rigidly to support load of concrete without deflec-
tions. Forms shall be built straight, true and to sizes
required and in every way shall conform with the require-
ments of a first - class job.
All cement shall be fresh Portland cement of standard
brand approved by the Architect, and shall conform in
every respect to the requirements of the standard speci-
fications of the American Portland Cement Mfrs. Assn.
Sand or All shall be fresh water sand of firm texture, evenly
Fine Aggre- graded from coarse to fine, not less than eighty percent
gate silica content, shall be free from mica and shall contain
no trash or foreign matter and not more than three percent
total loam, clay or slate.
Stone or Coarse aggregate may be gravel or broken stone of a size
Coarse to pass through a 1 - 1/4" ring and must be retained on a
Aggregate 1/4" mesh. It must be evenly graded from coarse to fine
and must contain no screenings, trash or organic matter.
Reinforcing Reinforcing steel for concrete shall be intermediate grade
Steel conforming to specifications of the American Society for
Testing Materials. Steel shall be proper length and beat
cold and deformed bars only shall be used; no rerolled
steel allowed. No steel is to be used which has gathered
a rust scale.
Steel shall be placed in forms and rigidly wired in place
or otherwise supported before concrete is poured. Bars in
slabs or beams shall be lifted or cradled so that bars are
well bedded in concrete.
Reinforced concrete shall be in proportion of one part cement
to six parts fine and coarse aggregates. In proportioning
materials, one bag of cement weighing approximately 94 pounds
shall be considered as one cubic foot.

MILLWORK & CARPENTRY
General Contr.ctor shall maintain a competent superin-
tendent or foreman on the job from start to finish and
such foreman shall be reponsible for the determination
of lines and levels, maintaining street barricades, lan-
terns, scaffolds, etc., necessary for the safety of the
workmen and the public.
Rough Stogk Framing lumber shall be #2 or better Short Leaf Pine,
& Framing thoroughly seasoned, mill sawn to full dimensions and
Lumber free from sap, shakes, large and unsound knots and all
other defects impairing its strength. Floor joists shall
be No.1 Long Leaf Pine. Ceiling joists, rafters and plates
to be No.2 or better.
General
Treating of Exterior millwork, all sides of exterior door frames and
Lumber bucks, plates, sills and all wood in contact with masonry
shall be treated with two brush coats of Cel- cur -sol. All
furring strips to be treated with Cel- cur -sol.

Floors
Vents below first floor shall be screened with 18 mesh
bronze screen. Roof vents to be 1 -1/4" galvanized pipe
or sleeves 4'0 ", o.c., placed around entire eaves of
house and screened precast vents in gables. Proper
access doors shall be placed to attic and area udder
house.
Millwork Corr truct and fit neatly in place, securely, all cabinets,
cases, shelves, rods, etc. indicated on the drawings.
Bedroom closets shall be cedar lined with T & G Red Cedar
and have one shelf 15" aide and ono shelf 12" wide and a
garment pole. Linen closet and towel closets to be fitted
with five shelves.
Kitchen cupboards shall be Pine to detail with lip Fir doors.
Counter tops shall be tile with splash at ends and back.
All exterior doors to be of Heart Cypress or Fir. Interior
doors to be stock one panel doors. Trim to be white pine
to detail.
All glazing shall be with D.S.B. glass set with wood stops
in glass doors and with glazing compound in steel sash.
Carpenter shall set grounds where required.
All floors except where indicated otherwise shall be clear
Red Oak sanded, filled, shellacked and waxed.

Usually fine and coarse aggregate is to be proportioned to
a ratio of 2 -1/2 narts fine to 3 -1/2 parts coarse but same
may be varied by the Architect to secure a smooth working
mixture. In no case will more than eight gall:ns of water
to each bag of cement bo used and same ray be reduced where
aggregate is wet. Designed strength for concrete shall be a
minimum of 2500 lbs.
Mortar Mortar shall be composed of an a ;proved mortar mix or Portland
cement and sand. If Portland cement mortar is used, not over
ten percent of line shall be added. All mortar shall be used
within thirty minutes after mixing and no re- tempering will be
permitted.

Steel sash shall be set in wood bucks brush coated with
Gel - cur -sol. Sash shall be caulked with caulking; compound

No lathing shall be done until building is acceptable
to the plasterer and until electrician and plumber
have had their rough installations inspected and approv-
ed by their Inspectors.
No finish plaster to be applied until roof is complete.
Application of plaster is to be in two coat job, scratch
and finish, with finish teture of trowel and brush,
fairly smooth and according to aproved sample. Finish
in baths and kitchen to be troweled mooth and hard.
Plaster shall not show scaffold marks or other discolora-
tion.
