Underlayment: The underlayment shall be a minimum built -up roof system consisting
of an ASTM D -226 type 1I felt or an ASTM D -2626 43 lbs. coated
bast sheet mechanically attached to the minimum 5/8" plywood deck
(15/32" if a re -roof) with 1" roofing nails and tin caps spaced in a 12"
grid and 6" o.c. on the laps. The base sheet shall be overlaid with an
ASTM D -249 Mineral Surface Cap Sheet bonded with ASTM D -312,
type IV asphalt. Asphalt should be applied uniformly so that the felts
do not touch. Tin cap and nail the Mineral Surface Roll 8" o.c. 1"
form the top edge of the felt. Continue up the slope from the cave with
2" headlaps. Overlap adjoining rolls a minimum of 12 ". Apply
flashing cement and cotton reinforcing fabric at all junctions of
flashings and the Mineral Surface Roll.
Edge Metal: Edge metal shall be installed at all perimeters with min. 12 ga x 1"
annular ring shank, corrosion resistant roofing nails spaced 4" o.c.
over the Mineral Surface Cap Sheet. All bonding surfaces shall be
fully primed with ASTM D-41 primer. All joints shall be lapped a
minimum of 4" with flashing cement between the joints.
All wall flashings shall be a minimum of 8" up the vertical wall and 4"
on the roof horizontally. All metal shall be nailed with min. 12 ga. x
1" annular ring shank, corrosion resistant roofing nails 4" o.c. All
joints shall be lapped a minimum of 6" with flashing cement between
the laps.
All edge metal shall be flashed in one of the following ways:
1. The edge metal shall be nailed over the base sheet as noted above.
The underside shall have a bead of Flashing cement. The top side of
the metal shall be fully primed with ASTM D-41 primer and allowed
to dry. The Mineral Surface Cap Sheet shall be bonded to the metal
with type N asphalt.
2. The edge metal shall be nailed as noted above to the top of the
Mineral Surface Cap sheet. The underside of the metal shall receive a
bead of flashing cement. The top side of the metal shall be fully
primed with ASTM D-41 primer and allowed to dry. Apply a 6" strip

Mineral Surface Cap Sheet.
All cave flashings shall extend downward a minimum of l -' /," with a
W' drip edge and extend up the slope of the roof a minimum of 7 -W.
Pre - formed valley metal (16 oz. copper or 26 ga. galvanized sheet
metal), min. 24" wide, shall be placed in the valley and nailed with
min. 12 ga. x 1" annular ring shank, corrosion resistant roofing nails
6" o.c. The valley metal shall be set in a bed of flashing cement not
thicker than 1/8 ". The top surface of the valley metal shall be fully
primed with ASTM D41 primer and allowed to fully dry. Any joints
in the valley metal shall be lapped a minimum of 6 ", be completely
counterflashed and bonded with flashing cement. The Mineral
Surface Cap Sheet shall be bonded to the valley metal with type IV
asphalt. Close the openings below the tiles at the valleys with a bead
of mortar and dress down to match the tile profile.
Each tile coming in contact with the mortar shall be thoroughly
wet with water before layup.
The roofing contractor shall certify to the local building inspector
that the tile has been conditioned in compliance with these provisions.
FIRST COURSE
1. Roofing felt is to be marked off with guidelines prior to
roof -top delivery of the tiles. Horizontal and vertical lines will be
chalked on the felt to obtain a professionally installed, watertight roof
tile system. Mark all horizontal lines at 15-%" o.c. from the cave lime,
extending up the roof slope to the ridge. A short course at the ridge
may be needed.
2. Mark all vertical lines at 11 -W o.c. Right to left, with the
first line marked 10" from the gable end.
3. At the eave line, mechanically attach a 1" x 2" wood strip or

4. Set thc first course at 16" from the cave; this will provide a 2"
overhang at the cave.
5. All cave tiles shall be set in a bed of mortar of sufficient height
to completely 51l the void under the barrel tile. A vent hole (weep
hole) should be neatly punched and mortar finished smooth and flush
with the ease metal.
6. Each pan tile shall be set over two full 10" mounded trowels
of mortar, centering the piece over the vertical guideline to keep the
row straight. Press the tile down firmly to allow wet mortar to spread
es•enly under the tile.
7. After installing a maximum of two rows at a time,
corresponding cover tiles are to be installed over the installed pan
tiles, embedding side laps with mortar.
8. Where the field tiles meet the hip hailers, tiles should be cut
along the hip boards. The joint between the cut the and and the hip
nailer shall be sealed neatly with plastic cement.
9. Where tile overlaps flashings, the tile must be fixed and
cemented into place.
SECOND AND THIRD COURSE
Repeat steps 6 - 9 as noted above.
HIP AND RIDGE
All hip and ridge tiles shall be set in a bed of mortar and fastened
with a corrosion resistant, hot dipped galvanized 2 44" tile nail. Point
mortar at sides to a smooth finis.
RAKE, GABLE, AND RIDGE TILES
Fasten and cement all gable rakes on the 15-W horizontal lines
using mortar and nails noted above.
