Wood Wall Construction Procedure (Block Wall See Reverse Side) STEP 1: The Opening Using your level, and your square, see how level and square the rough opening is (fig. 1 A), check for humps and dips in the subfloor . For example, the top or head and side walls of the rough opening may not be square, or perpendicular to each other. Or the rough opening might be in parallelogram shape. Still another condition to look for in your rough opening is twist. BE SURE TO CHECK ALL OF THE ABOVE BEFORE YOU BEGIN THE INSTALLATION PROCESS. All of these common problems can be compensated for by making correct adjustments on our door unit as it is installed. IMPORTANT: Your door must be installed level, square, and plumb within the rough wall opening to operate as it was designed. Start with a level sill and work your way up to the head making sure frame is plumb, level and square. STEP 2: Getting The Door Ready 1) Remove all packaging from around your door (clips or nails) on the doors that have held the doors closed during shipping must also be removed (fig. 2A). 2) Apply three liberal lines of siliconized caulking compound along the full width of the bottom of the rough opening or sub -floor using a generous amount of caulking in corners to insure prop- er seal (fig. 2B). 3) Set your door unit in the rough opening (fig. 2C), pushing in both bottom corners and sides until outside of jamb is flush with exterior sheeting. STEP 3: Measuring The Fit 1) While someone holds the door keeping the exterior of jamb flush to the exterior wall, take your long level and check to make sure the bottom is still level, and that the head jamb of the unit is level. Next, go outside and check the amount of space between the jamb and sidewall. Move the unit to allow the margins to become more even between the door and the jamb. Temporarily secure the unit by applying shims at all four corners (fig. 3A). 2) With the door temporarily held in place, push open the doors and see how they operate. If there is any sticking or binding, or if they swing shut or open by themselves, your door is not hang- ing level, square and plumb and adjustments are needed to make it operate properly. 3) If the doors are sticking or won't close properly, return to the exterior side of your door. Look for areas where there is too much space, and areas where there is too little space. Shift the door one way or the other, or lift one jamb leg or the other to even up the margins around the door. Insert shims to hold the door unit in position. 4) Push or pull the bottom of your door until the door is level vertically and square or perpendi- cular to its own unit head jamb. 5) Check the lockset holes (fig. 3B) to see that they are aligned. When everything checks out level, square, and plumb, and your door is operating smoothly, place shims at 3 more locations on each side including behind each hinge at top and at bottom to fill the margin of space between the door unit jamb and the the rough opening. And across the top of the head jamb at three equally spaced areas. Hurricane Code Approved Steel French Units STEP 4: Securing The Door 1) Secure your door unit permanently into the rough opening by removing one screw from each hinge on each side jamb of the door unit and replace with the long wood screws provided (fig. 4A). These will extend through the door unit side jamb and into the wall studs of the open - ing.(Be careful not to over - tighten and pull jamb outward.) 2) Pay special attention when shimming. Your shims must fill up the void behind the jamb at each hinge to create a solid surface behind each hinge (fig. 4B). If you fail to shim properly and leave open space, the door unit will be pulled toward the rough opening - leaving larger than normal reveal at center.. Refer to local building codes for hurricane code approved securing point location drawings. 3) There are bolts both at the top and bottom of your inactive door. Check where these bolts touch the head jamb arid the bottom sill and mark it with your marker. Drill 3/8" holes (fig. 4C) at these spots, then apply the metal plate (provided) to the head jamb only. (fig. 4D) 4) Now is the time to install your standard lockset following the directions supplied by the lock - set manufacturer. 5) Lastly apply your interior and exterior trim being sure to caulk between brickmould (with sili- conized caulking) and exterior sheeting before applying exterior trim (Fig.4E). Then caulk at seam of exterior sheeting and brickmould (with latex caulking) after trim is applied (Fig.4F) to get weathertight seal. Special Instructions For Block WaII Construction Step 1 - Preparing Opening Make sure your opening is free of all debris. Check to see if sill is level. If it is not level it will be necessary to shim the unit so that threshold is level. Check opening width and height. Opening should not be greater than 1/2" larger than the unit size. It may be necessary to add pressure treated lumber to side jamb to build out opening. Step 2 - Installing the Door Place a significant amount of silicone on the bottom sill to insure a watertight seal. Place door in opening. First center unit in opening. Next check for level and plumb. Using shims, fill in voids at top and bottom of side jamb and behind hinges. Place level on sidejamb(s) to see if they are level. While shimming, check reveal (gap) around exterior of doors and center and header. It may be necessary to adjust shims in order to position unit properly. This step is important to having a properly functioning door. Using masonry screws (tapcons), fasten the unit to the wall making sure screws are long enough to penetrate sidejamb into concrete wall. Check to make sure that reveal is still correct after installing screws and before installing trim. Next install interior and exte- rior trim. It may be necessary to trim moulding to have a correct fit. Completely caulk around unit to insure a weathertight seal. Caulk behind exterior trim before installing, and then along brick- mould and house exterior after installation. Refer to local building codes for hurricane code approved, block wall anchoring point location drawings. At this point, your door installation is complete except for the very important step of applying a proper finishing coat to all surfaces of your door unit. A proper finish is crucial when installing a steel or wood door. This preserves the door surface and without a proper finish your door can be damaged by the elements. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's finishing instructions for the finish medium you choose (paint or stain) to insure its prope'r application. Failure to prop- erly finish door unit will void the door unit's warranty. Troubleshooting: If you've finished installing your French door and it's not opening and closing smoothly check the following: Make sure your margins are even along the head jamb, side jambs and sill of your doors. If they are not, shim to shift the door so it is level, square and plumb. If your door swings open or closed by itself, it may not be aligned vertically. This indicates incorrect installation. Carefully remove screws and repeat installation procedure. Use proper flashing around the door to prevent leakage.
